    More progress.

Any ideas what I can do about the ht.access file?

What are using to view the files as you'll need to turn on invisible files so you can see that .htaccess file.

I've been logging into the cPanel and then File Manager. To be fair most of that has been on a Mac and I know hidden files are viewable. I'm now looking at it on a PC, and although hidden files are switch on, I wonder if it's being blocked somehow.

I might check that later again on Mac when I get home. At least the site is up now smiley

        I think we're there.

After having checked the file structure through FTP, I was able to see an empty .htaccess file on the server. Once I deleted that and renamed the ht.access file, switched friendly URLs back on and it is all working perfectly.

Thank you all for all you help.
