There is also Teleport (https://github.com/modxcms/teleport) as another option. I think it's recommended to Vapor (a progression of it) no?

With Teleport, you must use SSH, and install a bunch of stuff on your server as well.

        Progress.

I moved a copy of the zip file from the testing domain to the live domain and put in the /core/packages directory as advised.

Logged into the Manager on live site, and searched for local packages. It found that zip and Installed it. But I was not instantly logged out.

Now if I look at the live domain http://www.harrowhc.co.uk/ I can see the home page, but none of the links in the nav work, I get a 404 error.

Also I can see the pages in the content treeview but when I click on them, I don't get the full view of the content. Some tabs are missing and there is no publish buttons etc.

        But we're getting there.

Try going into the system settings and turning off compress_js and compress_css.

It seems the top menus don't display anything anymore. I can click in the menu and selected system settings, the page reloads but then it is just blank. The attached shows the screen after I selected system settings. And actually that happens whenever I select any menu option.

This sounds like a friendly URL issue. Is you .htaccess file still name ht.access ?

Regards to the other issues have you tried deleting the contents from the cache folder again?

That's not even the MODX not-found handling. It does look like a .htaccess problem.

Is the installation in a subdirectory of the web root? Sometimes, at least a few years ago, if you have a .htaccess file turning on the RewriteEngine, then do it again in another .htaccess file in a child directory, it would cause 500 errors.

Do turn off the compress_js and compress_css System Settings, though. You can do it with PhpMyAdmin in the modx_system_settings table. Change the 1 to a 0. Then delete all files in the core/cache directory before logging in.

                      More progress.

I changed the database table system_settings as suggested, and deleted the files from Cache. logged back into the manager and can now see everything properly. The content shows correctly on the right hand part of the screen.

Only the home page worked in the browser.

I can see the ht.access file in the main directory on the server and tried to rename it to .htaccess but it says that file already exists, although I can't see it.

I turned off friendly urls in system settings and now the whole site works in the browser (YAY!), but I really want friendly URLs to be switched on.

Any ideas what I can do about the ht.access file?
