Definitely try the script and let us know how it works. It will only take a few minutes and it will tell you whether the mail function at your host is working or not.

The next steps to fix your problem depend on the results of that test.

I think that’s the moment now to contact tech support of your host (or their support forum, in case they have one). Leave the php file in place and point them to it, and ask why mail() is not working on their servers. I’ve heard it’s disabled on some hosts, and you have to use SMTP or some other method. In that case, I hope they can provide some documentation for you.

Again, if mail() is disabled, you should be able to use this:

          http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,19370.msg120440.html#msg120440

          It uses SMTP.

hi thanks for helping out. i’m having trouble complaining to my host, they say they don’t offer 3rd party script support! and i’m worried i can’t use modx as i’ve spent some time trying to get my head round it and put some content on my site which i was hoping to be able to further cutomise.

but the whole thing has gone a bit crazy, if you do a search it looks a real mess - http://www.insideyork.co.uk

also my host gave me this reply when i asked them if ()mail was working:

            "Hi

            Thank you for your query

Your mail script is set to send emails to [email protected], our servers require that either the to or from address is a valid mailbox for your domain.

            Kind Regards,

where the email is in their reply was my email which i’ve edited out... thanks if anyone can help me out or look at my site and see if problematic for them also. my drop down menus stopped working and not sure why, search is funny and the email trouble.

To ask how and if the php mail() function is implemented is not asking for support for a 3rd party script, it’s a question about the php configuration on that server.

That’s pretty clear then: they have a policy in place (as a measure against abusing their servers for spam) that mails can only be sent to a mailbox on their system for the domain you’re using. So make sure either the from address or the to address are set to the address of a mailbox on that server.

Edit: I want to add, if having a mailbox on that server for whatever reason is not feasible, then you have to look into the solution Jesse offers, with Swiftmailer and SMTP.

As for your other problems (I’ll look into them) it might be better to open another thread, as this is no longer eForm related, so we can stay on topic here.

Edit#2: if MODx doesn’t work on that server, it’s probably better to change the host than thinking about changing the CMS.

thanks, i have email forwarding with them and don’t really want another mailbox to have to check, so does this mean i need to use the script or is there a way to set the contact form to still work. excuse my ignorance, i’m trying my best but it’s hard to get a grip on these thing. i appreciate your help a lot.

i’d rather not change hosts if there are ways to get it all working, just as i have a lot of plain old html hosted sites with them and it’s easy to keep them in one place, also i get a bulk account discount so it’s more cost effective...

also i’ve set up another thread to deal with some of those other issues: http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,19564.0.html

If having a forwarder is not enough for their policy, then I see only two solutions:

                  1) You set up a forwarder and a mailbox. That way you only need to delete the mails in the mailbox occasionally, but you don’t need to check it.

                  2) You’re implementing the solution Jesse is suggesting. I’ve never used it myself so far, so maybe he can walk you through, in case it’s necessary.

On almost all hosts, you can
                    1. set up an email account
                    2. set email forwarding for that account

                    And then later,

                    3. delete the account.

The mail will still be forwarded.

I would try just doing steps 1 and 2 for now and seing if that simple mail script will mail to the address you set up.

Once that is working, try deleting that account. If the mail stops getting through, you know you need to have the email account there. At that point, I would be thinking about changing hosts, even if it involves some hassle. Many good hosts have good multiple account policies, especially lately since hosting has become more competitive.

ok i finally managed to set up a proper mail box with the host, as the forwarding still wouldn’t work with that testmail script. so i’ve set the real mailbox to forward instead and now the test mail script works!! woohoo, which is great news. although the contact form still doesn’t seem to work... but at least we know that ()mail works
