I’d like to have a solution to this problem ASAP. So here’s some suggestions of mine. Let me know if they’re totally ludicrous.

    1. I could totally reinstall modx, hopefully backing up the database and having all my same info. The question is, would that also preserve the problem?

    2. I could begin a new modx site at another server (a move i was planning on sometime anyway) and manually transport content (template, images, page content, etc). Hopefully that would fix the problem.

Is there any other options I have that anyone sees?

That looks to me as if your files are becoming corrupted. Is this server perhaps in someone’s closet somewhere (and maybe they threw one too many coat on top of it)? Your specific problem does not sound like just a bug or configuration issue with MODx but rather a server issue of some sort.

Make sure that you make a backup of your database before you do anything else in case the whole thing goes kerplooey and you need to move to another machine/host.

Have you tested a simple PHP file in your root to see if that works (e.g., <?php echo ’hello, world!’; ?> )?

This is a problem that I’ve honestly not seen. It seems to be another slightly "different" PHP or MySQL configuration that you’re having fun battling. As I’ve said over and over again, you get what you pay for with cheap shared hosting. Assuming you’ve done everything right, and it sure sounds like you have, switch to someone like Dreamhost or Media Temple and I’ll bet you a year of hosting that you’ll see your problems disappear. wink

Not to hack on them, but MODx is simply installed literally on thousands of different types of servers, and this is the only instance of problems like this we’ve seen. I’m not saying a change introduced in 0.9.5 is not at fault, but I do highly doubt it.

Ok, I’ve decided to move the site to DreamHost. I already have an account there and can easily add another site. Is there a tutorial somewhere that gives easy step-by-step directions for moving the site to a new server?
Thanks guys for all your help this thread. I really appreciate it.

Hmmm ok so i have a few questions about moving the site. Do you reference the mysql dump (the old modx database) in the config.inc.php file, or do you make a new database?

Also, for some very strange reason, my .htaccess refuses to upload on my new server. i can upload it as ht.access, but as soon as i rename it, it disappears. weird. ok i got that. for some reason filezilla had got it’s "show hidden files" setting turned off".

What I do is to first create the new database and then import all of the old data into it (using the Query window in phpMyAdmin and the dump from my previous backup). That will create all of the tables and populate them with the data from your old site. Then I upload all of the MODx files and run an Upgrade install. To do this you need to copy the config.inc.php file from your old site to the new one, but manually edit it (in any text editor) to use the new server and database’s settings. Every time I’ve done it in this order it’s gone off without a hitch and seems to be the fastest way to go from nothing to a completely restored site.

A lot of servers are set up not to show you .htaccess files, so that’s why the file disappears when you rename it. It is still there, but you don’t see it because it’s a hidden file type. Some FTP programs let you view hidden files in directory lists (or connect using a -la flag), but if you don’t see it don’t worry.

Ryan, so far ’07 hasn’t decreased the troubles any. wink

Well, I’ve successfully moved the site to my Dreamhost server. The problem is this. Visit the site at http://kauffmanmarketplace.com/index.php and you will see a 500 error. As I understand from searches, etc, this is not all that uncommon and usually results from search-engine-friendly urls and .htaccess file errors. However, as before, when I login to the manager, the site is again visible and working fine. The pages all work and load correctly, etc. It’s just when I’m not logged in that the 500 error shows.

Thanks for all your help so far. I really appreciate it. Does anybody have any ideas on this one?
