ok so i just got done reuploading all the files. i deleted the old htaccess files and renamed the newly uploaded ones. and then i went through the "install" wizard and chose upgrade. and i’m still getting the same problem.
your idea about server settings and htaccess conflicting...would there be any way to test that?
is there a way i could do a clean reinstall without losing the pages i have now?

You would have to talk to your hosting provider about the potential htaccess conflict. Where are you hosted?
Also, from what version of the software did you originally create the site? There should be no reason to have to loose any work.

i have no mysql knowledge and would have no clue where to start with moving/reinstalling the site. i’m hosted with totalchoice. they claim it’s a problem with my modx index.php page.
Could this happen if every page in the site (including the site start, error, and access denied pages) has somehow been set to private within the MODx user system? Because it seems very odd to me that once he’s logged into the Manager he can view the site via a preview window, since that’s running the site using the same index.php and .htaccess file as it would for the public. Or perhaps it has something to do with strange database access permissions?
that’s kinda what i’ve been thinking...it might be more a permissions deal than anything else. anything i can do to check?
also, if i haven’t made it clear before, i can view the site anytime i am logged into the same browser...
umm.. is the site set to be offline in manager configuration?

Oh yeh... there is that possibility (the obvious always bites me in the butt).
Are your documents set to web access and manager access "Public" (which you should see just by hovering your mouse over them in the document tree)?
The site is definitely set to be online. Also, the documents are set to public for both web access and manager access.
