      Hello!

Could you please explain is MODx the right choice for this job. I would like to make a website with events in my city: it should have:
      1. database with all the clubs, bars, theatres etc.
      2. an event calendar made like a scrolling timetable
      3. search option (by date, by place, by event type...).

My skills so far are basic. I know how to make a simple CSS website (in Dreamweaver) and I would like to learn through this project.
My question is: could I use MODx to create a database(or I have to make it with MySQL) and an event calendar with search option?

      Have a nice day... smiley

        Hi Guys,

I know it may sound like a dumb question but I cannot find anywhere a tut’ about how to install and use an extra.

I wanted to choose something simple such as:

        http://modxcms.com/extras/package/54

but all it says is: Install via Package Management.

I assume that you upload all the files bundled in the .zip to the snippets folder?

Or is it through the Create/edit Snippet.. but in the above case the package contains multiple files and classes...

Please help or point me to the right link ...

        Thanks

Extras that refer to Package Management are for MODx Revolution. In Revolution, you just go to System | Package Management and click on Download Extras. Select the package(s) you want and finish. They’ll appear in the Package Management grid where you can right click to install them.

You can also manually download the .zip file to the /core/packages directory and select "search locally for packages." That will also get the package in the grid.

If you are using MODx Evolution, you nedd a different version of the extra. In the Extras section at modxcms.com, click on More Information and/or Older Versions to see Evolution versions of the extra. Usually there is a readme.txt file or comments in the add-on file explaining how to install it.

          Hope this makes sense.

            Hi,

I’m working on my first modx project and everything’s good so far, except the Quick Manager. I’m using Firefox (2.0.0.1) browser and there’s two major problems:

            1. When I launch the QM editor a flash banner that I have on index page pops in front of it, making it absolutely impossible to use. I tried to give the flash div a z-index value "1", in order too keep it behind the editor, but with no effect.

            2. The QM editor window shows just small portion of the editor, but there’s no scrollbar (I guess there should be). I can actually scroll the editor with tab key, but I don’t really want to tell my client that it is the right way to use easy CMS!

            Thanks.

              Hi,

I have never used MODx before, but am very curious about it. I am wondering if it will work for an upcoming project I am working on. The site will need these things:

              - cms
              - area for dealers to register accounts and login to see their information
              - store lookup
              - product finder that filters search results based on user’s choices

Wondering if I should try this with MODx, and if so, should I use evolution or revolution. Are there addons available that will help with the features mentioned above? The other options I am considering are WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, or CodeIgnter. I usually use WordPress.

Thanks very much. Any help is appreciated!

It’s all quite doable and there are add-ons available that would handle most of those functions already, specifically Weblogin PE and TV Explorer, and perhaps one of the Google Mapping add-ons for the store locater.

Apologies for not keeping you updated on how we progressed with updating the website. It’s not that we’ve forgotten about our website it was just that we got stuck and decided we’d ask the guy who installed it to the update. Anyways, what with holidays, sickness and work in general we had to put the whole project on hold. I’ve now attended my first lesson in my course on web-design (w00t) and hopefully will be able to let you know how we’re progressing with both our web-site and the updates.

The college is using Dreamweaver but, our tutor doesn’t seem to think it will be too much of a problem when transfering the skills to MODx. So fingers crossed that I’ll be able to ask more "pertinent" questions in the future.

Thanks again for all your help and advice. smiley

                    Hi

MODx and PHP newbie here, but as MODx looks so good I thought I would give it a go ...

Tried to install MaxiGallery, following instructions, added new snippet with Maxigallery code, created gallery top level page, and then gallery sub-page, both with calls to Maxigallery calls, but I don’t see the ’Picture Manager’ button anywhere, and on the pages, the calls aren’t being interpreted, so the calls just appear as text on the page.

                    See http://www.linux.bergenfriday.co.uk/index.php?id=48
                    and http://linux.bergenfriday.co.uk/index.php?id=49

Any thoughts on what have I done/not done?

                    Thanks

I have encountered that problem before. In my case it was caused by the rich text editor reformatting the snippet call behind and inserting newlines or other characters which are not valid in a snippet call. The solution was to
                      1. turn off the RTE for those documents containing the snippet calls,
                      2. reload the document,
                      3. reformat the snippet call and
                      4. re-save.
Just had a quick look at the HTML source for your documents and it doesn’t look like that is the problem actually. The snippet calls look okay. You could try it to eliminate that as a cause of the problem anyway.
