Does KiweeCommerce work?

@charliez: Oh, I am still using it. It works for certain projects, not a full solution. I got Shopkeeper doing inventory, but it needs shipping and taxes.

If I can chip in and +1 on what dubbs has said, I’m also really interested in alternative e-commerce solutions for MODx. As Ryan has said, KiweeCommerce seems to have died a death, and TreasureChest, for someone like me at least with limited PHP skills, isn’t ideal - to say I’d probably struggle is an understatement! FoxyCart does look good, but apart from not supporting UK PayPal standard, the monthly fee is going to be too much for some clients.

I’ve got 2 jobs on at the moment that will need an e-commerce solution of some sort. The first is for a small organic farm and budget is minimal (so no FoxyCart). I’d love to use MODx, but I’ve had a quick test of the WP e-commerce plugin and it is tempting. I don’t like the idea of having to hack around the Wordpress install to get a site looking how I want, it seems so clunky and inelegant, especially compared to MODx, but it needs to be done now. As Susan has pointed out, it’s probably far from perfect, but from what I’ve seen so far it looks fairly straightforward to setup (even for me!), and just as importantly, fairly intuitive for the client to use.

The other project won’t be until the beginning of next year, so I’ve got my fingers crossed for MODx Warehouse. I’m sure there are a lot of people who’d be very interested in hearing how things are coming along with that!

Stay away from that WordPress e-Commerce plugin. It LOOKS good, but it’s absolutely riddled with holes and bugs. A friend of mine was hired to write a book about it and he said if he had to run his biz of that plugin, he wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.

I have found Zen Cart to be the only appealing PHP/mySQL open-source software that can handle shipping zones, international customers, payment gateway integration, and the ability to import and export csv data for products listings and inventory (with an add-on). The template system has very little in common with modx, but it is robust and can be converted from most any existing modx template.

I’ve just started a thread to see if there is any interest beyond mine in having integrated search between a Zen Cart and modx here: http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,39520.0.html

The forthcoming Zen Cart release promises a more modular approach to plug-in writing which should accommodate easier user integration, so I think there is room to build a bridge between the two in the near future should there be any interest.

I had sent Dan Milward an email asking him there were plans to port WP ecommerce to MODx, he said "It’s probably possible. Would you want to commission that development?" I then responded how much and how long and haven’t received a reply back.

I have used FoxyCart and it was the perfect solution for that particular project. I have also been testing ShopKeeper for an upcoming site. It is what the client wanted, a shopping cart that sends the orders as emails, no paypal or credit card processing. I made a few modifications like inventory tracking and sales tax calculations. It is a javascript based cart, I think it would be better as a true php snippet, but it is easy enough to work with as is. It is very basic, I would only use it for special cases. I do not need true ecommerce solution yet, but I know eventually I will, so I am trying to find one that works with MODx. So I am looking forward to Warehouse as well.

The request I made to Dan to port his WordPress plugin was partly an attempt at evangelism to make php developers aware of project like MODx. Maybe we all can choose a couple of php plugin developers and get them to convert their projects to MODx.

I know we have solutions for some of these and there are ways to get these to work. But is also nice to have some variety. I use to measure a CMS by the number of modules. Figuring that the more developers the better chance it has of surviving. Now I know better.

I don’t have a lot of faith that Mr. Milward is a good software architect, and even less in his ability to write a test suite, so I for one wouldn’t trust his MODx port (if he ever follows through) any more than I trust his WP plugin. Proof is in the pudding, though, so we’ll see... I’m extremely skeptical though.

There’s really an opportunity here... Magento and other eCommerce CMS’s are very short on CMS functionality, and CMS’s are short on eCommerce functionality (that’s the beauty of FoxyCart in many ways). What is needed is CMS module with a good set of normalized database tables to support a product catalog, shipping, et al, and have a good library of web services to connect to PayPal, Yahoo, etc. THAT I have yet to see.

Has anyone tried prestashop ?
It seems pretty powerful and clean - even has same icon colors

Hi Everett, thanks for adding to this. It’s certainly made me think twice about it! If anyone else who usually uses MODx has resorted to using the WP e-commerce plugin I’d be interested in knowing how you got on - good or bad. The problem is that I’m a designer and not much of a developer - I’ve installed Wordpress and the e-commerce plugin locally and really like the look and feel of the back end interface, but I’ve no idea about the underlying code!

PrestaShop looks interesting, I’ll have a proper look at that when I can. Might also have a look at Zen Cart - I’ve always kept away from ’full-on’ solutions like that, osCommerce, and Magento, to be honest mainly because of all the negative things I’ve read. I guess that’s one of the selling points of FoxyCart - it’s compact and streamlined.

Is anybody else fired up about MODx Warehouse? I know I got pretty excited when I heard about plans for it.
