I don’t know what’s causing it, but it does exactly the same thing for me if that’s any consolation.
I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong.
Have look at this ticket I’ve raised,
http://svn.modxcms.com/jira/browse/MODX-604 and MODx-596 for that matter, it may shed some light. I’ll do some more investigation here into this.

I’m sorry, but this is almost definitely going to be issues with the MySQL drivers compiled into PHP for MySQL 5.1.x. Both MySQL 5.1 and PHP 5.2.8 are barely a month old, so there are likely going to be issues, especially considering this is the first GA release of MySQL 5.1. I suggest sticking with a stable environment.
OK, but I have 3 environments here, Centos5(very stable), Fedora 7(not so stable) and Win2Kwith XAMPP(old but stable) and this has affected all of them at one time or another, also I can re-create the fault at will. I think at the mo it will only happen during installation and then only if the install causes a log message to be output hence its a bit elusive,

I use:
Apache/2.0.59 (Unix) PHP/5.2.6 DAV/2 on Mac OSX Leopard
MySQL 5.0.41
...and have had no occurrences of that error.

Hmm, I’m starting to wonder now, how many of your platforms have xdebug on them? It’s this that’s picking this up on mine. I’m not sure where this ’100 nested calls’ limit comes from, who sets it, why its this value etc. I’ll look at this. I have several Centos5 platforms, some are clean, i.e don’t have xdebug or a dev environment as such, I’m not sure I’ve seen this everywhere when I think more about it.
>>>Ok, found the limit, its an xdebug setting, even if I change this to 1000 I still get recursuin around these lines :-
15 0.2713 5069632 xPDO->log( ) ../xpdocachemanager.class.php:153
16 0.2713 5069680 modX->_log( ) ../xpdo.class.php:1384
17 0.2713 5069896 xPDO->_log( ) ../modx.class.php:2539
18 0.2714 5071440 xPDOCacheManager->writeFile( ) ../xpdo.class.php:1438
BTW my centos5 box gives me the following :-
httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_2.centos.4
php-5.1.6-20.el5_2.1
mysql-5.0.45-7.el5
mysql-server-5.0.45-7.el5
As far as I know this is stock, i.e a fully updated box.

OK, think I’ve found the cause, please look at last comment here
http://svn.modxcms.com/jira/browse/MODX-604
but, why does it sometimes fail on Windows?

I tried older version of XAMPP (1.6.8) with:
Apache 2.2.9
MySQL 5.0.67
PHP 5.2.6
And everything was installed OK - so I guess somebody should post a PHP bug report..
