The intermittency of the errors sounds like you have an environment issue; most likely with FastCGI and server permissions, or opcode caching.
Please try it with 0775 and 0664; sometimes going 0777 can cause other issues.
After that, I’m not sure - we run tons of servers with FastCGI and the environment you described, and have no issues. It’s probably a server misconfiguration somewhere.
Very Confuzzling. I don’t find it intermittent. Its seems pretty consistent - each install has consistently given me a blank screen in mgr, has consistently not copied some setup files, regardless of APC setting or file permissions.
I’ll chg permissions and keep looking. We have over 250 domains on these servers and a multitude of CMS (live and test) & estore installs (Zen, OSc, WP, MT, Drupal, Joomla, ExpEng, Exponent, Typo3 and now ModX), and numerous custom applications yet its only ModX that is not installing.
