David, Sorry, just want to make one very final post myself..........

Those of us that have come to know and love MODx, realize how seriously good this product is both for ourselves and our customers, whether a small independent or a large corporate.

The work people like Ryan and the code team have done is quite amazing, 1000’s of hours, without return. Credit where credit is due, absolutely. Without Ryan and everyone else in the core team as well as a committed community, Modx would not exist as it is today.

As far as selling commercially, it’s as much about your own ability to demonstrate to customers why MODx is the right product and you’re the right company. In this respect if your selling to business, does your own website actually portray the right image and do you have enough people, skills and resources to manage corporate customers. For the record, our company strongly recommends MODx in the commercial sector. We may be quite a new business but I can say that we are already winning a lot more orders that we are losing and we are completely upfront about MODx as the Open Source CMS were using. If our customers see other businesses are using the software and we have great references this also adds a lot of credibility. I hope we can share some of the business names that will be running websites based on MODx in the near future (And everyone, we can all help to raise the bar if we have completed good commercial projects – lets show visitors and help the MODx team build-in that credibility also)

The MODx founders are fully aware of the needs of commercial customers, the concerns they may have (unwarranted with MODx) in rolling out Open source etc. But it’s not the job of MODx to create a commercial model for our benefit, that’s our job. Indeed MODx target group is actually people like us not our end-users.

Overall I do believe the founders are striving to making MODx the best product out there. A CMS that delivers great functionality, has a robust flexible and reliable framework that’s good for web designers and developers and users and is backed by a professional and well structured team that finds the time to always listen to our views. Its actually a more democratic process and gets better results than working in commercial businesses where there are behind the scenes arguments and lack of development focus. Here is all on view for everyone and anyone to read !

Anyway as my own final summary and for whats its worth “the goal of branding and marketing MODx under the new name Tattoo (I think the name is actually OK if handled correctly) should be to ensure that its design communicates the key values that the founders, team and community strive for every day”.

To me, Tattoo needs to say “We are serious and professional, we produce a compelling CMS that’s functionally rich and we work very hard to ensure its 100% reliable and fully suitable for developers, designers and their commercial end users who need to rely on the product day in and day out.

Does the proposed logo design we have seen reflect these values well? For me that’s the main issue. If adopted, I don’t think the proposed design in its current form does and wonder how you would carry it through to the actual website branding. Colour is fine however, "green is environmental and friendly" and thats true of Modx /community

So, like many, I think the design needs to be cleaner, less fussy, more professional and businesslike to get across the passion, focus and goals of the founders and team. Most programmers and designers like to know everything is in the proper place, that we don’t try to be too clever, everything is solid and reliable and that design works well to get our values across – lets hope the values of MODx are really reflected into a final Tattoo logo design

So after all it’s back to the logo again. I like the name tattoo, but I think the logo should express more about the product. Btw, the green and black color do match together, especially when you think about tattoo, most of the color being use is black.

I think by the time the Tattoo ready, we will get a clearer information on what’s the logo gonna be and the direction of the product. So until then, I’ll patiently watching the progress towards this.

      Sincerely,
        Wendy Novianto

Everyone is free to discuss and toss out all the ideas they want regarding the Tattoo and the future. Doesn’t mean it will change the boatloads of hours and hours and hours of work that’s already been done and is waiting for final content, but it’s fun to hear pre-emptive feedback! :p

            Thanks briggys,

Tattoo is honestly going to be a while away for mainstream applications and acceptance, and will take a while to reach the level of polish that MODx enjoys. For example, it will definitely be PHP5 only. Heck, we don’t even have an internal testing/preview build for it yet!

MODx is NOT going anywhere anytime soon, and will continue to be upadated and improved... you should see some of the things that are baking for it in the labs! There’s so many incredibly cool things planned and in production for it ... laugh

We very much agree on this smiley

Given the first customer feedback from my customers, I am not worried about selling MODx. In fact, it has made selling a much easier process for me. I have 2 MODx projects coming to an end and that will soon join the Site Showcase section. These are small projects, for SME’s, and I have already sold a third.

Those won’t be showcase websites that will have you go "waow", but customers testimony will be very positive. The last meeting I had with one of my clients, the feedback I had was : "We didn’t know web publishing could be so easy, and we didn’t think things would be finished as quickly". Funny thing is, I am still in the learning stage with MODx and I believe next projects will be built much faster. Anyway, I don’t know about you, but for me it’s QuickEdit which turned the table : customer like not having to work from the backend, and they find QuickEdit pretty intuitive too.

Just wondering because I have no experience with this sort of open source project; why is the branding and design a closed door process and the code/backend an open process. It seems as MODx attracts more design oriented users you will have a very talented pool to draw from for ongoing brand development.

Now, I can certainly see certain challenges with having an open branding effort such as the risk of democratic design finding the lowest common denominator or endless subjective design loops but it seems those challenges could be overcome with a little thought on the process and the gains could far out weigh the challenges.

I think a lot of the comments on this thread are based on fear of the unknown and opening the design process might allow people to react to the facts instead of to the unknowns.

I certainly know that the design/interface end is where my talents would be best put to use for the community and right now making templates is about the only place I see to provide that (which i am currently working on some).

I am also planning on making a "MODx for designers" site that focuses on tips and tricks for using MODx from a front end standpoint and providing themes and other handy stuff for the "look and feel crowd" The templates will probably be mostly designed as starting points for designs and I plan to include the layered PSD files so designers can freely change images and colors to suite their own needs. The templates won’t be targeted at the end user although they could be used by that segment and maybe a more polished "flat" version could be produced for each template (or even a few) that could be used by the end user.

The idea behind these production templates is that they could get a designer to the fine tuning stage very quickly without having to worry about setting up tables, writing all of the CSS, finding a color pallet etc...

Some thoughts about what they would include:

                    - Editable Photoshop and Illustrator files.
                    - CSS file(s)
                    - Color swatch
                    - Any custom snippets, etc. used
                    - Template file
                    - Directions/Documentation

Any additional input would be welcome. smiley
