Just wondering because I have no experience with this sort of open source project; why is the branding and design a closed door process and the code/backend an open process. It seems as MODx attracts more design oriented users you will have a very talented pool to draw from for ongoing brand development.
In my view, those who show dedication in contributing to the project, and produce quality contributions as determined by the existing team, are invited into the team to participate in the marketing and/or technical processes. We’ve been careful to select new team members as we’ve progressed over the past year, but have rarely if ever rejected anyone that displayed the talent and initiative to become a team member. So I really don’t see that the marketing efforts have been kept closed-door any more than the SVN repository is only available for approved team members that possess the skills and/or desire to make commits to the core code. In fact, we let our early community post ideas on branding and took everything into account (we had a lot less posts and other things to deal with at that point) when making the decisions we have so far, and I don’t plan to stop listening to the voice of the community in this regards.

I for one welcome the growing talent pool, and as an active contributor, I can’t imagine you will not at some point be invited to the team; or you might request membership before then, if you feel compelled to contribute at that level before we take notice (though I think we already are wink ).

And great idea on the MODx for designers site. I would like to see something similar for developers eventually, as well.

psd files won’t do me much good, I use Gimp. Maybe you could save them as .tiff files instead?

Susan, tiff files don’t support layers do they? You would have to use some sort of editor that supported a format with layering, otherwise, the idea of customized graphic templates is not very useful, since you would not have the individual layers of the images to modify without affecting the rest. I use Paint Shop Pro, cause I don’t like to spend so much money on software, but it does support PSD files and even has it’s own native layered format.

The PSD files is the best option in my opinion, as most professional designers do work with this format, and it provides a very flexible and standard way of distributing graphics that are easy to change for your sites’ needs.

In the last two versions of Photoshop layered TIFFs have been supported. I am pretty sure that if an editor that does not support layered TIFF files tries to open that file it just opens as a flat TIFF. This could be a better solution for cross compatibility since Photoshop treats them in exactly the same way. I guess a little experimentation might be in order to find the best possible format but I would think that since the majority of the professional design community uses Photoshop that compatibility on that front would be the top priority, then get as compatible as possible beyond that. I actually do most of my site design in Illustrator then export my illustrator file to photoshop for any fine tuning that is better done in that environment.

Some things that would be helpful for me to know: I assume GIMP uses layers, what format does it use for this feature? Perhaps I could save out a version for gimp users and make it a separate download. What format does Paint Shop Pro use? I would be happy to post some trial files for you guys to download and let me know if they pass along the layers properly.

Also, this is looking like a new thread so it might be a good idea for an admin to move it over to a new topic.

Ok, good to know, being so new here I am still trying to get a feel for the lay of the land. I have tried to read as many of the past forums as I can but it still takes a bit of time to get to know the system.

Also good to know, right now I am perfectly happy trying to get a better understanding of the project and get to know the people. I will be contributing at whatever level my time and interest allow and as time goes on I imagine that commitment level will either increase or decrease. At that point, I will have a much better idea on the level of long term commitment I can/will provide. I learned my lessons long ago about jumping in over my head, certainly something my personality is prone to but I am sick of sucking water.

Thanks. Yeah, a developer site is a good idea as well but well over my head. If someone wants to head that up I would be more than happy to discuss putting it all under one roof.

Whitefen, the design stuff is really not up for debate much more as the bulk of the work was completed months ago. Now we’re going to start plugging in content. But as stated elsewhere, Tattoo is not ready for prime time and MODx will btw the defacto project to base your sites on.

Also, I really like your idea on the designers resource site. That’s exactly the type of documentation we’ve wanted on our site here and we’ve planned for a long time to put up such content... Feel like taking the reigns and pushing forward with it? smiley

Yeah, I was not suggesting opening up the work that has been done for debate. I was just trying to figure out the system for how this is usually handled on an ongoing basis. It was really an information gathering question, not a suggestion phrased a as a question. This is really the first Open Source community that I have been a part of forgive me if I ask some noob questions;-)

EDIT: I might also add that Jason Coward’s reply answered my question well so it is no longer a question:-)

I certainly can do this documentation but it might take a little while since I could really use the documentation myself:-). As I start to figure everything out, I can make the docs as I go. What is the normal procedure for this? Since I will be documenting as I learn, it would be a good idea if someone with more experience act as editor (I imagine that all your docs must go through this kind of process anyway).

Right now I am feeling a bit overwhelmed since I sort of started out trying to put my mind around MODx in a very broad sense. It did not take long to realize that I need to focus in on some areas and take a more linear approach so I have started work on my first template. This has already made me feel a lot less boggled but there is still so much to wrap my brain around before it will be production knowledge.

If you didn’t read the whole thread, xyzvisual (yeah, it’s a long one tongue), read Ryan’s post.

Tattoo and MODx will be different branches of the project : MODx supporting PHP4 and Tattoo being indeed php5 only. Those two branches will aim at different markets. You’ll get more details in due time wink And, for the sake of clarity : don’t expect Tattoo anytime soon.
