Yea I agree 100% the manager is not really an issue as long as the credit is discreet and professional, such as it is now. Adding our logo to it would be even better, and certainly would welcome such an option.

The frontend is fine the way it is now... up to the developer to decide.

...and yes I have a Tattoo, all 6cm of it on my upper arm... discreet grin

And actually, in the ultimate manager overhaul, it should be pretty easy to add a company logo that grossly overshadows any "MODx branding" I’d think. But don’t hold me too that. wink

You can do that even with MODx 0.9.1! There’s a feature that allows you to add your own support information and logo to the manager login screen.

      Here’s how it’s done currently:

copy manager/includes/support.inc.php into a new file called manager/includes/overwrite.support.inc.php then modify overwrite.support.inc.php to display devloper’s logo and suport info.

This is soley a developer feature and gives the developer a way to display support information.

Future versions will be a bit more flexible.

realy think the way to customice clients usage of the manager is the frontend editing by snippets, plugins.... and the manager is for the managers. there is a couple of snippets , plugins... can do it and all things in the manager in fact can do from the frontend whith the apropiate code. realy think is the way to give clients the feel of his company and give them only the freatures realy need. and if tomorrow need a service the developer works to give them this freature.

          Another angle -

          tat·too1 (tă-tū’)
          n., pl. -toos.

          1. A signal sounded on a drum or bugle to summon soldiers or sailors to their quarters at night.
          2. A display of military exercises offered as evening entertainment.
          3. A continuous, even drumming or rapping.

I have to say I am not keen on the name, sorry.

The name Tattoo should work well, its all about how you market and brand it. If you go with dark colours and a ruff edgy interface, yea, I think you’ll scare people.

However if you continue with the clean interfaces (although under a new brand) you have used to date, then people will at least run it and go "wow" this is different, like I did when I first tried MODx.

I couldn’t agree more! Most of the team, including myself, like a clean, professional interface so that part is not likely to change. Now, will it change in terms of color scheme? Not sure...but it will ultimately remain clean and professional nonetheless. And, you’re right, it’s all about how you market the brand.

As for double branding, I’m thinking it is an unnecessary complication. and sure Ford might make Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Saab, Jaguar, Rover, however most of those are through take overs and they continued to sell the original product under its own branding as a separate product.

This is one area that I’m still on the fence on. It might get complicated having two names for essentially the same product...then again it might not. Personally, I like the name "Tattoo" and think that there really isn’t a reason to have two names. One is more than enough and easier to market.

Quote from: briggsys at Feb 03, 2006, 02:56 PM

A major point is that I am not forced to have the name Tattoo anywhere on the site, therefore the name Tattoo is only used in marketing to web designers and not really used in the end result. So the name is not really an issue to the coperate user, you might just have to point that out to them.

Ah...and you’ve tapped into one of the reasons why naming the CMS "Tattoo" isn’t too big of a deal! More on that in a sec...

Quote from: Whitefen at Feb 03, 2006, 04:02 PM

The marketing needs to be focused at those who will run Tattoo not the coperate managers not their sits visitors.

And you just hit the nail on the head! This is probably the single most important statement that could get me to sway off the fence towards the Tattoo name! If you’re marketing it towards corporate use, ultimately you’re marketing it towards the developers/designers and administrators of a company...not so much the typical corporate managers. Damn good point, Whitefen!

I also wanted to add that one of the main things that attracted me to MODx out the sea of other CMSs was that the branding on the manager was very unobtrusive and ambiguous. If the new manager is going to have Tattoo written all over it with no ethical solution to remove that tagging it will certainly not be usable for a certain number of my clients.

This is a non-issue if you’re able to modify the manager template to meet your needs. If you’re able to change the look of the manager so that the name "Tattoo" isn’t as apparent and "in your face" (which is won’t be anyways) then a corporate manager is far more likely to accept it and won’t care about the name anyways.

I also want to be clear that I don’t want cause or stir up trouble here but this issue is extremely important in my ability to use this tool as part of my business and therefore I want to be as clear as possible about my concerns and find out as much as I can about the path the project will be taking so that I can plan accordingly.

I think it’s safe to say the just about everyone wants a tool they can market effectively to all types of businesses and individuals. Ultimately, I think it boils down to who our target audience is. As far as the name recognition and buzz, it’s ultimately your typical web developers/designers and administrators who would see the name and functionality and know what it is. The end-users and corporate users probably won’t see the name all that much due to the fact that it will be the web developers and such who will be introducing it to them. At that point, it’s all about how they present it...which is to demonstrate how it works rather than just telling them the name of it and what it does.

Definitely lots more to think about! I’m leaning towards the idea that naming it "Tattoo" probably won’t have a big impact on corporate use too much...especially when you consider the ability to "template" the manager so that it’s geared towards corporate use. smiley

I think I mislead the discussion in here than. Sorry for misleading the thought that you have whitfen. As far as my concern goes, I would personally agree to those idea as well. It’s just something that jump of to my mind when reading about rebranding it to willow or whatever the name is.

I hope nobody get offended by my previous comment regarding about my personal concern.
To close my post for this topic, I’m looking forward for the next step that we will be directed by our core team. A clearer plan for the next releases will be great, considering two different path of MODx future, one will be the GreenCore and the other one will be the Tattoo. Maybe an official statement from the founder or people in charge on the core team regarding the plan for 2006 will make it clearer for us to know on which direction we are heading.

              Sincerely,

My "Willow" comment was a misguided attempt at levity that backfired and shot me smack in the eye. The beauty and pain of these forums is once you say something it is there in black and white and you have to live with it and I take responsibility for that particular hornet’s next. I think we are all on the same page now though so thank goodness for that.
