No I dont agree Speedstreet, its not the best tool for blogging, there are other choices and you are incorrect in my opinion of where Modx should be, Modx is a great CMS (CMF) there where it needs to be..

I might have missed some things on this long thread...

I agree for blogging dedicated solutions such as WordPress or Expression Engine might be better suited. They are not as powerful as MODx but EE offers a very powerful template system and custom variables closer to template variables than any other system I know (I should know since I use it for my blog laugh )... but then again could we have expected less of the creators of Code Igniter ?

As to where Modx should be, where’s that exactly ?

        Interesting thread smiley

I think one can discuss such things to death because everone has his own model in his head and positions him intuitively somewhere in the already stated model. And it´s human´s nature to get all things put in a clear model which is easy to understand and explain (hey, I´m german, we try to regulate EVERYTHING laugh ).

It is very notable that you even just think about it, that is a very good sign for the seriousity with which this project is driven. But I think that there will not be the model where you can state as the modx-targeting-model for every user. For example I think I don´t fit in any model you talked about yet. I have gone to business for myself last june with web services, specialized on Mambo/Joomla implementations, before that I worked as management consultant (what I studied). I design my sites on my own and implement them also on my own with all coding which is necessary. So what am I? Designer? Coder? End-user? Neither fish nor fowl, just happy with MODx because it fits all my needs. I´m not the end user, but I have the possibility to design and code the system for end-users for easy using it. But I´m also the end user, because it´s a pleasure to use this system as a end user who just manages his content. You see, all is relative.

My opinion is that MODx targets all who are able to use it as a tool for building websites, the design part also as the coding part. And it´s up to these people who use it as a tool to make it accessible to "real" end-users which don´t know HTML/CSS/PHP. Because it´s my understanding of this wording that a end-user doesn´t know much about these things and he is definitely not the target of modx as user of a tool for website building but he is the target for custom modx-solutions.

So I think the word "end-user" is misunderstandable.

@ryan: c´mon, let me be unique laugh

But you´re right. So the question is to define "end-user". Since I follow the development at joomla (and also the development of its "end-users"), I hope the focus is more on tuning the tool MODx for "advanced users" not to redefine it as yet another portal system (erm, this was your wording if I remember right). But my opion still is that the end user (in my definition the one who uses a MODx system which is set by an advanced user) has to feel comfortable. So the target should be to give the advanced users as much possibilities to make the system comfortable to the end-user.

Okay, time to go to bed, too much users in too few sentences laugh

Marc, I couldn’t agree more, and I’ll quote myself (how narcissic is that tongue ??)

Wendy, let’s remember that though MODx is not aimed at end-users in the sense that it’s not meant to be used by them to build websites. But it most certainly aims at end-users as editors of content !

There is a difference between a category of people : designer, coder, end-user and their use of the system : expanding the system (coding modules, plugins, snippets), building custom dynamic and rich websites (designing MODx powered websites) and using the system to administrate or edit content.

I think that’s a major thing to keep in mind there.

I think we do agree about what you say smiley

I think in the future we need to develop a way or maybe a standard so that snippets can be pre configured for the editors. A previous CMS that have used allowed the editor to create a page, then select whether that page was text, gallery, calendard, directory, etc.

                For example:
If they created a new gallery page, after naming the page, they were automaticly asked where the gallery wanted to pull the images from in the file area.

For a calendar page, it was hooked into the site calendars which were managed from a calendar managment area.

That kind of setup is better, I think, when compared to the current setup where an editor creates a new page and then has to enter a snippet string and variable to tell it where to pull data from.

So I think we need a way to preset these snippets and then the snippets need to have required methods of function to allow these preset setups.

Or something. Did that make any sense?

What you’re referring to in part is what we’ve discussed internally as "content templates". Makes total sense. wink

And now you also may be starting realize why our target is actually developers/advanced users and not "regular" end users. tongue

according to this Modx thought (like the religious intonation) he he, you are refering to Modx as a tool for the adv user aka web developer who in turn is using it to design websites for their customer ie end user.

Why not let the end user be the one who has the control over their own site instead of hiring someone which can be costly, turn the end user into an adv web developer. This is what Modx has the potential to do and is already turning end users, its what people (small biz owners especially) are looking for.

If the end user is targeted towards adv users there are way few adv users then there are end users, which means Modx will have limited growth potential, if anything target the small business owners who want to manage their own site. The end users IMHO should be inspired to be an adv user, if the end user has the Modx power they can become confident and customizing their own site and becoming more skilled in web design, cms and development.

In a word, providing a learning framework for everyone beginner and adv users alike. There are added benefits to this as well in promoting expression via modx cms, creativity anyone can do this not just for adv users.

This line of thinking may also imply that the end user would no longer need to hire someone to do their site instead they manage it themselves or inhouse. This can work both ways, those who can manage it themselves and those who want to hire someone to do it for them. The internet is leaning more towards giving the power to the end user ie the people.

I for one consider myself an end user while at the same time turning into an adv user. In using Modx I do not have to hire someone to manage websites this is a good thing he he. Of course everyone here has a perspective and we are all correct on some level. The point I was making is that no need to limit the end user to a set category, make it for everyone to enjoy.

The adv user concept is becoming extinct, everyone can now become all things and do all things "power to da people",
