Switch to Mac ? How would you rate the benefits ?

Interresting... I have a Seagate 5400rpm myself, the 120Gb (aka Momentus 5400.2)... I had to drop the idea of getting the 7200rpm because I had a 180€ rebate on the laptop and thought I could change the HDD myself... which is doable but require opening the laptop entirely. Thus I am wondering about the 5400rpm vs 7200rpm performance gap...

Anyway, so far I have no complains about speed, even if I’d rather have the 100Gb 7200 rpm drive...

I noticed on thing : Mac OS X handles memory way more efficiently than Windows XP (even with cache management software). WinXP often used the swap file even when RAM was available, OS X doesn’t do that and it shows

For those who have switched, and to avoid you a long and boring research, the pipe character ( " | " ) on Macs is Shift + Option + L

Took me ten minutes to find !

That is unless you’re on a US Keyboard, in which case it’s Shift + Backslash.

And Macs don’t have alt keys, they have option keys.

Or it’s just Shift+"\" on a standard (American) Apple keyboard

Yeah, right, I gotta get used to it... though on my keyboard it’s written "alt" and the option symbol : intended for switcher ?

I just loaded in the latest MAMP setup, shut down Personal Web Sharing in Preferences, deleted the mysql and php I had originally installed, and moved the htdocs folder to an external firewire HD that I’ve had laying around. (need to get some stress off this old machine’s hard drive, it’s going to die just about any day now!)

All seems to be working just fine; I put the MAMP control panel icon in my Dock so I can start it up when I want it and shut it down when I don’t.

It certainly doesn’t get any easier, just drag-and-drop the MAMP folder from the uncompressed .dmg disk image into your Applications folder and it’s installed! Its control panel lets you change the port (by default it uses 8888 so it won’t interfere if you want to keep the regular OS X Apache installation running) and the document root painlessly.

Now we’ll see if MODx installs without problems!

It does install without any problems, I use MAMP for local testing
