Hosting Reccomendations

But it runs MODx and most other scripts (gallery, poll, forums, newsletter) fine?

So far. Everything I’ve thrown at it has worked. But I’ve not tried EVERYTHING of course

If you know of some software that is notoriously buggy in CGI mode, I’d be happy to test it. I’m really curious to know if they have it configured really well - or I’ve just been lucky!

Well, I have decided to reccomend http://www.mediatemple.net after hearing about it from Ryan.

I have heard a lot of good things about Mediatemple, and the fact they host Digital Web Magazine is a testimony to this...

Err...looks pretty good...at least till I got to the "What’s new in 4.0" part:

MySQL: 3.23.58

Fluid Hosting is using the latest 4.x version of MySQL. But a 3.x version? I don’t know about that. I would find out about that and see if this is still the case. If it is, you might want to ask yourself if this presents a problem. I tend to like duplicating my production environment to what my hosting provider has as much as possible.

Only gripe I have about Fluid Hosting is that they are using the 1.3.x version of Apache with no plans in sight yet for a 2.x upgrade. Plus, I really wish they would upgrade to the 4.1.x version of MySQL...I really would like to have the ability to use more complex SELECT statements in my database call.

I use P4host [ http://www.p4host.com ] and have recommended it to several friends and co-workers. I have never had a question or concern that wasn’t answered within an hour because their support team (especially Kevin) are always on AIM or MSNIM. Good rates too! I subscribe to the Extra Plan for $8.99. They have PHP 4.3.11 and MySQL 4.0.25.

I’ve been really happy with Bluehost https://www.bluehost.com/

With a standard account you get 50 MySQL databases, unlimited domains (!). A good friend said they now will do an auto-install of MODx, the way a lot of hosts do for WordPress, but I haven’t been able to verify this... perhaps because my bluehost account is older than his. But that aside, I’ve used bluehost for a number of MODx sites and I’ve never had a problem with the host... the PHP modules were all there, permissions were always good. Thumbs up!
