TextDrive : not for the price argument, but because they give a share of their income to opensource developpers (those who have joined them), they’re friendly and skilled (official hosting service for Ruby On Rails...).

You missed it, but there was a VCIII lifetime hosting up for grabs a few months ago (I am myself a VCII, e.g 10 domains, 1Gb for life, 400$).

Regarding server location serverbeach is a good one and in France http://www.ctn1.net/?lg=fr is particulary interesting except if you plan to do it by your own at home => http://www.citefibre.fr/ and http://www.erenis.fr/ could be helpful

I’ve been using AventureHosting for some time now. Good prices, great service. It’s a UK company, with servers in Texas, and they just opened up a new server farm in Dublin. Their people seem to really like what they’re doing, the sales staff as well as the tech staff, and they are very active in their forums as well as responding very quickly to trouble tickets.

The advantage to running PHP in CGI mode is the ability to use suPHP to have the script run as the site’s user. That way you don’t need to have any files or folders world-writable, since the script is run as the same user as the owner of the files. It is a bit slower, and requires some variations in coding sometimes, but I do like the idea.

I’ve been using 1&1 for about 2 years now and couldn’t be happier with the capacity, performance, price, and support.

1&1 is another example of a big hosting company. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen their 5 to 7 page ads in magazine (I mean, literally...their ads are a total of 5 to 7 pages!!). Only concern I would have with them is how good their control panel is and how much control you get; they don’t seem to have a whole lot of screenshots of their control panel app. Other than that, 1&1 looks pretty decent.

They are a big company. And they’ve only recently (2 years ago) gotten into "small" business hosting. Their big-ness seems to be a real plus in speed and reliability. Prices and bandwidth are stellar. Sorry for gushing, but I’ve dealt with some real junk in the host arena- and I just can’t say enough good about 1&1.

On their comparison page it says this:

So aren’t they running PHP as a CGI module?

Good question... I’ve never had any problems doing anything so haven’t really investigated.

Hmm... so there you have it. If you don’t like PHP as CGI I guess 1&1 isn’t for you. I’ve never even noticed. Obviously it’s not been a problem for me. When would this be a problem? Is there something I should be aware of
