I think Authorize would be a great one to support, as would Google Checkout and Paypal.

I definitely agree. Knock-out a couple of these front-runners and watch the ShopX user base quantify!

I also concur with the Authorize, Paypal, and Google.

Just to throw in my $0.0227725 CAD,

I would also suggest 2Checkout as another from the get go as it is very popular with smaller business with low volumes.

I think that there will eventually be a payment module for any gateway that people want to use. But unlike most eCommerce programs, you won’t have to install ALL of them and then wade through a mishmash of code in order to figure out how the one or two that you’re using work. That’s what I like most about this project so far: It’s MODular, so it does just what I need and just how I want it done.

There are at least three general types of payment processing that we’ll need to tackle:

          • "Regular" (e.g., Authorize.Net AIM, Echo, etc.) - does not leave your site to process the payment, requires SSL on your server and usually a merchant account
          • "PayPal" (and other services like old-school PayPal) - customers are transferred to the processor’s site to complete payment and then sent back to yours afterwards (does not require SSL on your site)
          • "Offline" - saves the order info (including credit card info) to a database for offline processing, or produces a mail/fax form for printing out, or emails the info to the customer so they can print and send a check, etc.

Each of these has their own specific challenges, but they’re nothing new (other eCommerce apps have been dealing with them for years now). There is already a working Echo module, so with some tweaks that can be made to work for any of those types of gateways. I have a working offline system that’s doing very well so far, although I’d like to review the security of it more before distributing it to others. The only gateway type that we haven’t tried to use yet is the "PayPal" type, which I find the most difficult because the customer leaves your site and then returns (or doesn’t). So you need to save their order to the database as "pending" and then update it if they come back with a payment complete code. I guess people who are used to dealing with this type of gateway won’t find this strange, but that logic has always seemed bass-ackwards to me, so I’ve avoided it.

Hopefully a friend of mine who theoretically has read this thread and has a lot of experience in custom Paypal modules (including some that I think don’t make it look like you leave your site), will chime in in your middle bullet point Zap. smiley

PayPal actually now has several different services, so I’m really only referring to that "type" of gateway (their original model) in bullet #2.

Hello and thank you for developing MODx. I’ve been following with great interest the latest developments regarding the Shopx project.

The point is that I’ve been painting for a while and I’d like to try to sell some of my paintings online and since MODx is my favorite CMS I really would like to use Shopx for this.

It would not be something big. Just something to show the painting, details page (bigger image) and options to choose sizes and (maybe) frames.

Another thing is that it MUST be in Spanish. I can translate it if necessary, no problem with that, but I guess I will need a language file for that. I might use English as well later in time, but I must start this project in Spanish.

Possible clients must be able to upload files (pictures) since I plan to offer the possibility to turn them into paintings. I guess I can use eform for this, but the way to connect the whole thing is beyond my understanding right now.

Regarding payment options, the more the better, at least that’s what I think now but bearing in mind that this is my first approach to the whole subject of e-commerce, shopping cart, etc…

                  So, my questions are:

                  1. - Will I be able to do this using Shopx in the near future (1 to 2 months maximum)?

                  2. – If the answer is “no”, could you recommend me a simple but stable cart or shop system or whatever it’s called suitable for this kind of small project?

                  Thanks in advance…

                    Hi knud,

I don’t think there’s any reason you couldn’t do this now. You’ll need some patience as you tweak it and get it set up, but it’s entirely doable.

                      Thanks Ryan,

The point is that I’ve only created a couple of sites with MODx so far. In them I’ve used eform, MaxiGalery and DropMenu and since I read that Shopx is in an early state of development and might need a lot of tweaking…

The fact is that I’m far from being a programmer. I have some knowledge of HTML and CSS and after working on those two sites I told you about, I’ve got a fair idea of how MODx works but setting up a shopping cart…

Anyway, if you say that it’s possible right now I’ll give it a try. Is there any tutorial, guide or something that could help me get started?

In the repository I’ve seen “Catalogue with Ditto, MaxiGallery 0.2”, is this related (or could this be related) to Shopx in anyway?
