Need Help Backing-Up My Modxhost Directory

Will I need to backup more folders?

Also, I downloaded Wampp, and that makes no sense to me and has no instructions. How would I use this program to back-up on a local server?

My computer is a Mac, but my site is hosted on a Linux server through godaddy.com. Will this xampp work better? Will it work in my case and give self-guided instructions on what the crap I’m doing?

You need to backup AT LEAST assets, because if you transfer over MODx default files and folders
including: assets/templates/modxhost/
You will get files (like .css) overwritten.

You could
1. Backup ONLY assets folder
2. Inside MODx manager: Clear Cache, Disable plugins and modules, turn off FURL and log out
3. Transfer over new MODx files and folders
4. Replace the modxhost folder + the snippets (and other addon folders) with the ones from YOUR backup
5. Run install in upgrade mode (w/o selecting demo webpage).
6. Log in and click SAVE settings.
7. Delete install folder, set right file permissions

You need to know
- MySQL user/password
- Character/collation of your DB
- What snippets new addons you want to upgrade

Yes, the modx coding team member told me to back-up the modxhost folder and all files (they’re downloaded to my computer), and I have also backed-up the modx DB on my computer.

But you lost me on everything under "You could"...

Regarding what I need to know, I can find-out my sql username and password. I don’t know what you’re referring to for the "character/collation of my DB."

I’m really not sure what snippets/add-ons I want to upgrade. I was just told that I need to upgrade my version of modx to the newest version.

Also, would xampp work on a Mac?

I can back-up my site on my computer (I already have), but I have no idea how to put it into a local server, what this would do, or what the benefits would be.

Can you walk me through on this?

But do I not need to rename my templates as the modx coding representative said? She said that if I didn’t do this and rename my paths to the new templates that all changes would get screwed-up on install. That got me hung-up at the beginning, and I’m so lost at this point it’s pathetic.

But I have a couple of last questions for now:

1. When I back-up these files, I download from my FTP onto a folder on my computer, right?


2. Now I have everything loaded on my computer and am ready to back-up on mammp. I then load everything onto mammp. Both versions of the site would then be running, right, because it would be using a different address?

1. Yes, FTP the files to your hard drive. It doesn’t hurt to keep extra copies of it on usb sticks, external HD’s and CD’s.

2. Copy your backup to a folder in /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/ E.g. /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/testing/

3. import your database (.sql) with phpMyAdmin and name it something like this: nameOfYourDatabase

4. Now open config.inc.php in /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/testing/manager/includes
and change TO:



5. Does your site http://localhost/testing work NOW?
