    Ok...I need help...

I am using an older version of Modx and am really trying to back-up my website so I can upgrade.

I had somebody make some changes to my template, and so I was told that I need to back-up my entire Modxhost directory. I was given the following instructions:

You need to do two things. You need to make duplicate of the modxhost template, and rename the duplicate. Then you need to use an FTP client to go into the MODx files, and duplicate the assets/templates/modxhost folder (with all its files in it) with a different name, usually the same name as the template in the Manager. Since servers differ in how they handle filenames, it’s best to keep the folder name a single word and lower case.

Then you need to edit your duplicate template to change all the paths that specify assets/templates/modxhost/... to assets/templates/thenewfolder/...

But I’m not a computer programmer, and I have questions from here:

    1. Under assets/templates, I have 2 templates: default and modxhost. Which one do I need to duplicate? If it’s the modxhost template, then do I just save it as, for example, "hopeagain" located at assets/templates/hopeagain?

    2. Would I then use my FTP client to download all files under assets/templates/modxhost to my computer, copy all files and rename to a different folder, and then upload that new folder to the assets/templates/hopeagain folder?

Any help that you could provide would be appreciated. Please pardon my complete ignorance.

you should backup your entire modx installation directory not just the templates.
Also make sure you backup the Database as your template actual HTML is stored there, the directory under assets/templates/ just store the images and script etc. so the database is super important.

After you have all the files and database backed up upload the new version files overwriting your old site and run the installer.
you might not even need to use your backup files if the new install don’t have that template.

also check the wiki there should be a detailed guide how to upgrade.

Right, but as I said, since changes have been to the template, I was advised to do the above-mentioned changes as well.

I still have the two unanswered questions listed above.

        Any advice?

I’ve been at this for a month now and am getting frustrated. If I back-up what I have and don’t duplicate and rename my templates before I do, then my website gets screwed-up and then I have to have someone else rebuild it for me.

The instructions you got make no sense to me.

The original instructions came from someone on the Modx coding team, but now I can’t get ahold of her...

It seems as your existing webpage is using modified demo content. But when upgrading you should NOT install "Demo web page"(!) So don’t check/mark that on install/upgrade.

But back up everything (files + DB SQL) and install a copy of that in a local web server (PC: xampp / Mac: mampp / Linux: lampp) if you want to test out things.

Or hire someone helping you out.

Godaddy.com hosts my site, and I have Modx loaded into a database.

When you say back-up my modx database, are you talking about the one inside my modx manager or the godaddy.com database that stores the complete package?

If MODx 096: You can backup your MySQL database from inside the manager (as I described in the link)
Otherwice use phpMyAdmin on your host.

                    Mrhaw:

Yes, I had somebody make some changes to my templates, but I don’t know exactly how they did it.

If I download the new version and don’t click "Install Demo Content," this will not effect my new templates?

                      That is what I’m saying!
But I also say don’t do anything before you have FULL backup.

The alternative way described in the old wiki (as in my link)
                      is highly recommended.

But there is a lot of tweaking, fixing and work when upgrading.
That is why I recomend you to try it out on a local web server first. smiley
