Worked fine once I uploaded to my remote server - didn’t even change the ht.access file name to .htaccess! Ho can that be? Still no joy on local server, but I’m just happy it’s working up where it counts.

The most likely culprit is the AllowOverride directive in your Apache configuration. Make sure it is set to AllowOverride All on the proper directory or virtual host entry (depending on how Apache is configured) so that the .htaccess directives will not be ignored.
