Where is /~mycomputer/ in the URL coming from?
In the unix comand line the pwd is:
~/sites/moddy/modx-0961p2
in the browser its actually this:
http://mycomputer.local/~mycomputer/moddy/modx-0961p2/
Hope this helps.

I would assume that your RewriteBase value should be /~mycomputer/moddy/modx-0961p2/ then, not just /moddy/modx-0961p2/
nope, tried that and a whole range of variations. Seems like it’s something else. I’ve even added
AllowOverride ALL
in Apache and nothing. Where else could I look?

No, rewrite only works with "real" domains, not the ~directory type. I forget the actual terminology for it, but that won’t work. I’ve often run across it while setting up a new site on a new domain before the nameserver changes were globally disseminated, and have to wait to set up the friendly URLs.
So it should work when I upload to my remote server with bona fide domain? That’s a relief then. I thought I was going mad. Many thanks.
It’s definitely not a mac problem. I’m running MODx on the Apache installation that comes with every mac. I’m even using the User Directory.
The Site is located in:
/Users/myname/Sites/modxsite
The Rewrite Base is:
/~myname/modxsite/
Other than that you won’t need to modify your .htaccess file!
If that doesn’t work, you might have a problem with your permission bits on the folder? Try setting it to 0755 for a start?
