Everyone probably has their favourite framework/tool, but I don't think "alternative to ExtJS" is what we should be looking for as that keeps the (IMO) troubled mindset that one tool should do it all and that the DOM is not important. I do have some new thoughts on the subject myself that I'll blog about in the next week hopefully that to me looks like the perfect balance between developer, dom and user-friendly..

Good point, Mark - I look forward to reading your forthcoming blog post on the matter. Your post from February: https://www.markhamstra.com/extjs/2013/extjs-dream-nightmare-jquery/ states many of the issues w/ using a framework like ExtJS and certainly started a dialog in the comments section. I'm interested to hear any thoughts from the core MODX dev team.

      Please no ExtJS.

It's a massive barrier to entry for developers and they jump ship fast as it's just another proprietary format to learn. Use the DOM, and maybe Backbone/Angular/raw etc when needed.

We have to use ExtJS until 3.0. I look forward to being able to run away from it and never look back.

This quote tells me enough that I don't ever want to have to learn it... and you use it all the time!

Six years ago when Revo was first being developed, since extjs was going to be used, I used it for a client's website. The articles I wrote can be found here. I have only dealt with it once since then, to make some minor adjustments to the Revo Manager (adding the "New Category" button to the Elements tree toolbar).

I actually don't use ExtJS hardly at all. I gotta keep this impeccable blood pressure somehow. I make others do it wink

After using it for a while, my attitude toward ExtJS/modExt has changed from utter loathing to grudging admiration mixed with mild distaste. wink

                Thanks all for previous feedback!

I've tweaked and changed quite a bit based on feedback and having a fresh look at it: version 0.2 http://pd.incb.us/1arC7Go

                New stuff:

                • I've added a basic modal example on the logout link
                • an idea to show new MODX versions in the system alerts menu so you can't miss them
                • added a system info menu idea to the top left MODX logo
                • I spotted some inconsistencies in Font Awesome icons I'd used - fixed those.
                • Upgraded to Font Awesome 4.0.whatever it is, so had to rewrite quite a bit to make that work
                • Mobile tweaks
                • Made the tab navigation in the tree and the content panes more obvious, hover styles more visible
                • Dulled the page bg colour to bring out the content better and make it less distracting
                • Tweaked button sizes so they're less fat and bulky
                • Removed the example RTE - I think everyone knows what one looks like and it was just in the way.
                • Changed most slide animations for fades to match menu styles - also looks a bit better and smoother I think
                • Removed the 'Home' item from the top nav - I don't think it's needed and it's rare for me to EVER look at the dashboard after I've logged in. The dashboard link could be added to either the 'site' menu or inside the 'user' menu where it could be billed less of a landing screen and more of a customisable home screen - have more options of graphs, stats, recent stuff, news, whatever on there.
                • Update the Fireworks PNG file with most of the new stuff in, organised it better, added alongside v0.1 the new v0.2 stuff
                • Changed the entire repo to allow me to utilise Grunt and helps me keep track now it's sort of versioned sensibly. Will allow me/others to easily compare new versions with new on the demo pages
                • Probably other stuff that I can't think of right now!

As before, any feedback (good or bad!) please send it my way. I'm always looking for ways to make the idea better, more consistent, easier for users to see what's what, etc

You can still see the previous version here: http://pd.incb.us/17VlBRA

                    Very cool.

Shouldn't the Element tree label be "Elements" rather than "Templates"?

It seems odd to be using what is usually a settings icon for plugins, though I'm not sure what would be better, maybe a hook since that's what they really are. wink

Is "Page Extras" the TV tab? Is there some reason for not calling it "TVs" ?

This looks really great. I hope there's a means by which we can get this implemented.

Also impressed by your French translations. Just say it in English, with a bit of David Ginola accent, shout a bit louder and generally they get the message smiley
