Please excuse me for butting in. I just wanted to mention Subscribe/Notify/EmailResource, as alternatives to DitsNews since they haven't come up in the discussion, and also Mark Hamstra's SubscribeMe package and Bert Oost's mChimpX.
Subscribe let's users register themselves and select tags that can be used to send things selectively. It adds them to the Subscribers group (or optionally other groups). It does require users to give a password, but it also allows them to manage their preferences (tags) and unsubscribe. IMO, just using an email address would make it too easy for hackers to mess with your subsciber's settings.

EmailResource sends an email version of a resource with inline CSS based on user groups and tags.

Notify sends a link to a resource or a custom, editable message and (optionally) notifies Twitter and Facebook -- again based on groups and tags.

I don't know the details on Mark's
SubscribeMe package, but it allows the option of paid subscriptions (which
Subscribe does not).

mChimpX helps you use a MailChimp campaign in MODX.

If you want more info about any of these, please start a new thread.
