2.2 Doodles Tutorial

I've been trying for weeks now to use the original Doodle tutorial, the modExtra extra template at GitHub, and now the latest updated Doodles tutorial for Revo 2.2. I have yet to get any of them to work.

The Doodles tutorial part I, the snippet, works fine. Things start falling apart in part II, the CMP. There, it has the base controller named index.class.php. With that name, the first attempt to display the simple panel fails with a Javascript error

Changing its name to index.php causes a 1 to be displayed where the panel should be, but no .js or .css files have been added nor is the panel tpl added.

Has anyone actually worked through this tutorial successfully? On a new installation of 2.2?

I have followed and completed 2.1 (parts 1 and 2) and I am now finishing 2.2 (part 2). They work fine.

It is true that JavaScript errors are not user-friendly at all. I have come across such messages myself while working on these tutorials. The source of the error could be anything. Some examples are:

• 1. mistype of xtypes
• 2. use of undeclared variable (or mistyped variable name)
• 3. data store of a component (e.g., grid) not loaded successfully

Most of the time, the error was produced due to me trying to customize the code of the tutorial. As I have already mentioned, the tutorial on Revo 2.1 works fine. As for the one about 2.2, I have reached the "Adding an Update Window" section and everything is fine, until now.

I exactly copy/pasted the tutorial code, step-by-step, as well as comparing with what's in the github repository, and it balks at the first attempt to load the empty panel. However, installing the Doodles extra via Package Management works just fine. Very frustrating.

Just careful with them.

LIke I said, I ended up copy/pasting all the code directly from the tutorial, as well as comparing with the code in the GitHub repository. If there are errors like that in the tutorial code I haven't been able to find them.

Perhaps it's 2.2's additional change for manager's regClientCSS.

The tutorial has no mention of any css files. This line would fail since there is no such directory or file.

er... no. Anyway, I'm going to back off for a few days. I have permission from SitePoint to document my experience of working through their HTML5 and CSS3 book using MODx. Doing something simple like that will relax the frustration and temptation to just forget trying to deal with Revo at all.
