Piwaille, it was indeed a humoristic way of telling you you can be...how do I put it ?... "exhausting" at times wink (in french, "fatiguant")

If Susan and then Jason take quite a bit of time going through the elimination process to solve your problem, the least is to listen and try what they advise you to do. You might think you know better (which your post indicate you do), but if so, you wouldn’t need anyone to help you, now would you tongue ?

If you’d be so kind as to confirm the removal of the external API has solved the too many forward issue, that would be great smiley

Piwaille, it was indeed a humoristic way of telling you you can be...how do I put it ?... "exhausting" at times wink (in french, "fatiguant")

If you’d be so kind ...

Piwaille, if you do post preposterous and inflamatory things on the forum and adress them to english speaking people, at least you could have the courage and politeness to post in english.

I don’t have the time to answer this disrepectful and inflammatory post right now, but be sure I will !

My tolerance for any overt rudeness, childish behavior or consistently draining of energy over a long period of time of/towards the people responsible for donating more than anyone could remotely imagine (in getting this project to where it is today) is almost non-existant, and is clearly covered in the agreement everyone clicks when signing up for forum membership. I look forward to the translation from a native French speaker of the post in question.

No one has any right whatsoever to make demands of anyone on this project, and no one should remotely feel entitled to anything. And that includes me, the project co-founder, and the core team.

As far as I can tell (not being a French-speaker), he’s saying that he removed the MODxAPI and the problem still appeared. He insists that this is a bug in the code, and that he’s been patiently trying to explain that to the developers but to no avail. And he says that he’s made suggestions about improving the dbQuery function that he hopes will be implemented because it might help.

And generally he says he’s sick of trying to deal with this and getting nowhere...

Given that language and communication styles may be complicating factors here, perhaps we should all just take a deep breath and move on.

OK... if he’s sick of it, then no one is forcing him to use it. He’s welcome to move on.

The DB API will not be touched as the next major point release (0.9.7) is a completely different system and we’re not going to burn cycles on a dead end.

ZAP, you’re not entirely wrong, but some (very essential) nuances are lost on you.

Let me do some short translation to reflect what has been, in essence, said.

He says is he did remove the API but "he told us that it wouldn’t change a thing". Then in reply to my explaining that Jason’s humor was a way to tell him he was getting tiresome, he said it was "just as tiring for him to face developpers who are always too sure of their code and prone to blame it on the addons" (!!!). He continues by saying he is amazed that he has been able to put up as long as he did with this (supposed) behavior from the devs, that if Susan and Jason had bothered reading what he was writing, and check what the API addon was doing, they would realize since no page using the API was published it’s obvious this COULD NOT (I translate the capitals) be the source of the problem.

Then he goes on, saying he is tired of repeating himself, that he has indeed checked all that had to be checked (error pages, unauthorized pages’ id). He adds that additionnal checks have been added since RC3 implying that the system itself is programmed to be condescending (this part I am interpreting, if someone who speaks both language can verify my interpretation... Heliotrope ?).

His conclusion is he will only resume discussing the issue if the devs admit their code is at fault, that he has provided clear instructions to fix it, and that he has extensive professionnal experience in computer science, and reminds us that in his field he couldn’t afford to have "non operationnal code" and low availability.

Then he explains he has spent enough time and he won’t post in english, and asks me to translate his post if I care enough (my initial answer has been to ask him to do it himself, but since it’s hard for english user to comment, react or discuss what is being said there, I finally took the time to translate this : as I said, if Aour, Heliotrope or OncleBen or Laurent want to add nuances or give another interpretation of Piwaille’s post, I’d be glad - for the sake of avoiding misinterpretation - to have other pair of eyes here).

Let me finish by translating the part involving Ryan, so that every person which has been (IMHO wrongfully) "accused" can decide whatever answer they want to post. Piwaille says he has provided Ryan with instructions to make the db_query function more robust (subtly implying Ryan has not done what he should already have, here I am interpreting but I doubt I am wrong), stating that his improvements should - in his understanding - be added to 0.9.7 which even if MODx engine (litteral translation : makes no sense to me, also shows Piwaille is fairly wrong and does not know what PDO is and how it will radically change the dbAPI) would remain weak it would at least be better suited to the demands of his environement.

The final "bouquet" is really out of line if you want my opinion : He demands excuses and ask that the dev team looks where he has said the bug came from and confirmed to him that his documented analysis is accurate.

Now you know what has been said - or at least, my translation of it.

But I don’t think my english/french skills are at fault, nor my appreciation for nuances here... also, most people would agree I am a mediator rather than a prosecutor, but sometimes things go way beyond what is acceptable given the time, efforts, openness that this team has shown time and again.

I think the thread should be split from this part and on :

No, this isn’t flame bait, it’s just someone with an issue but no tact.

So far as I can tell, the issue comes from piwaille’s server being overworked (possibly because of the forum) meaning that SQL is unreliable.
He does make a valid point which is that MODx should handle this situation better. He is correct. However, he is wrong to *demand* that it handle crappy web hosting better.

Whilst MODx doesn’t currently trap for the cause of the situation, it does realise when things would be an infinite loop and registers the "Too many forward attempts" error. Again, if I’m reading this right, piwaille is saying that the situation shouldn’t occur in the first place. He is of course right, but as it is caused by his own overworked server, it’s not exactly MODx’s top issue. And as for "clear instructions to fix it", well he’s not actually offered any code to improve things - he’s just demanding things change now to meet his personal circumstances. He has literally instructed us to fix it.

As he has continually blamed MODx, it is natural that MODx type things were looked at. Yes, some people have wrongly fingered parts of his MODx setup. The reason for this is that most people seem to be getting on just fine with 095, and so it is most likely that any issues stem from non-core elements. But the bigger picture is that the sql server sucks.

Of course, there is no point in giving 0.9.5 a bulletproof jacket because 0.9.7 has a different body, and that sort of thing will be sorted in the run up to 1.0. The lesson is patience. If you can’t use software that isn’t bulletproof, don’t touch anything that starts with a 0.
No, I don't know what OpenGeek's saying half the time either.

@davidm: Thanks for taking the time to translate all of that properly.

I actually did get most of those nuances from skimming his post. I was just choosing to ignore them because it didn’t seem worthy of a response. It’s pretty clear looking over the thread who is being helpful and patient and who is being rude and stubborn.

I tend to react to flamers with my patented "Ho hum, what’s HIS problem?" defense, which tends to keep my blood pressure down and my mind more focused on things that matter to me. But I can certainly see why you and others who’ve made such an effort to help would be annoyed enough to reply. Just don’t feel that you need to respond to any old bomb that someone throws into your midst, since the value of this software is plain to see and the community that supports it is rightfully appreciated by most everyone who participates here.

Is there really an issue behind all this smoke and dust? It seems to me to be a whole lot of kvetching over nothing. If your database server can’t handle the queries you need to process through it, then you need to upgrade or reconfigure your database server. If you insist on continuing with the same setup knowing full well that it isn’t capable of responding as promptly as your CMF program requires, then you’re either going to have to live with errors or modify the CMF program yourself to work in your situation. Now THAT would be a helpful post: I have X substandard or difficult situation and I made the following modifications to adjust for it...

0.9.7 will be out really soon now anyway, so this will be truly irrelevant before you can say, "schadenfreude".
