OK Gang,
I must be missing something, but I have tried several times with different iterations to install MODx on a website. The same error message occured each and every time. The install has been tried at the root level and as a directory on the root. This seems to have been an issue according to other users on the forum. However various solutions have been unsuccessful. Any ideas?
My server/host runs UNIX-based operating systems (such as Linux and Solaris) on Apache web servers. Currently, running Apache 1.3.33 on Redhat Linux 7.3 and 9.0 servers. The current PHP version running on the server is PHP 4.3.10 and MySQL version 4.1.14.
My local computer is a 4x2.5ghz G5 Macintosh. The browser is Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8.0.6) Gecko/20060728 Firefox/1.5.0.6. (multiple browsers have been tried so I don’t think it is a cache problem).
Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated. The drool factor for this product is still pretty high!
Thanks in advance

Can you clarify: does this fail on both the hosted server and your local computer or just the hosted server?

Just the host. My situation does not lend itself well to "local" computer testing.

Have you spoken to your host? Essentially MODx is doing various checks on the environment and it’s not happy. This one sounds out of your control tbh.
Some quick googling suggests this is most likely related to shared hosting and/or "running Apache in CGI/FastCGI mode".
Could you list the solutions you have tried?
Are you going to /install directly?

If you have access to a Mac, I strongly recommend MAMP
http://www.mamp.info/. It can be installed without impacting any other installations, and has everything you need.
Thanks Paul & Scott,
As mentioned my local environment does not allow for an install (i.t., security, firewalls, etc). Everything must go directly to the server. I will speak to my host about CGI/Fast CGI mode. Interestingly, all other tests that run during install seem to be good to go.
The other solutions I have tried are basically trying other browsers (IE, Safari, Netscrape & Firefox).
Another possiblility is that I am using "Dreamweaver" to FTP files to my host so something may be getting toasted in the upload (MacBin to text).

Thanks for the MAMP recommend!

Most likely, the key here is going to be the ini settings for the PHP sessions. If you can share your phpinfo regarding session configuration, we can most likely identify the issue pretty quickly.
BTW, does the url change to add ?s=set when you access the installer?

Yes it does.
Still checking with host on phpinfo session config.

you can make a php file that has this code inside it:
Then upload it to your site and view it.
