You can use Ecwid with any site even if it is installed locally. However, you need to have internet connection to open it. If you want to test your store, just enable the "DEMO PAYMENTS" payment method.

I have never tried building a e-commerce/shopping cart system before. I have one friend who wants to try marketing one product and is not sure if one of one heavy lifting paid systems might not be overkill etc...

Sounds interesting. But what I miss is a shop system which integrates it’s products into search result from the modx search engine.
Another issue is always the payment gateway. Here in switzerland I need a credit card gateway to saferpay. On a hosted solution there is no way to implement it myself. So if the hosted shop doesn’t support a saferpay gateway - it’s useless for our company.

Of course no. You can use your Ecwid store which works on Amazon EC2 for free.

Yes, it’d be a very nice feature.
Ecwid can already send information about your products in JSON format, so actually it is possible to integrate its products with modx search engines.

Hey, nice job. I did it myself too but not so nicely - in my page you click "submit order" and then on thank you page you can click "Pay now" and then you’re redirected to PayPal.
