Although, before I actually got my hands dirty and created a couple snippets of my own, I would have been the type to say "I can’t get this to work, why?"

I don’t know. I haven’t looked at the packages. Probably in something with a .sql ending to the file.

i edited the install.php removing the apostrophe ’ in "that’s".
it’s working now!

Sounds to me like something is going into the database without going through $modx->db->escape() first.
