    I think the number one thing is what you mentioned in your post, SimplePie is actively being developed while MagPie does not appear to be anymore. That right there was sufficient enough for me to change over. Moreover, it uses Snoopy (which has issues) instead of having its
    own cross-server compatible URL retrieval (using curl if available, fopen if not, etc) meaning that this module will work for as many server configurations as possible. Due to inactive development, Magpie doesn’t fully support RSS feeds, and is even worse when coming to Atom feeds. SimplePie is by no means perfect in this regard, or even when the feeds are invalid, but with each release it gets better. Also, its API is relative straight forward and pretty easy to use allowing the parsing of even GoogleFeeds with its custom name spaced tags. I don’t even want to think of how hard it would have been to code "Google Events" with MagPie.
