Hello samba,
Do you recall if this was after Ben and Joel took over Site5? The migrations to The Planet were on hold still for unknown reasons?
The prior owner (founder) had let things slide for a few years prior to the change in owners, so I suspect you were a member during the darker period in their history.
Hey AMD,
It may indeed have been before those guys took over... but because I bolted, I never paid attention to Site5 after that, so I can’t really comment on the timeline. So given what most are saying here, I think the positive experiences are probably more typical today, and my "historical anecdote" is just that, and not a valid warning about the current system. Curiously, when I started with Site5, it was really great.
I noticed a colleague above pushing Liquid. I would concur on that - their tech support is really, really good! I try to be very self-sufficient, so when I ask a question, it may be a doozy. They hang in there with you, sometimes through tons of emails! I’ve done SO many sites there that I have run into some problems, and they bust their you-know-what to solve them.
I had a site just go completely down, boom, nothing whatsoever in the root of the site - kind of scary. It was a hardware failure, and they restored everybody on that box pretty quick to the previous day’s backup.
Another time I ran into some kind of weird Manager error. I can’t remember details now, but between me and the tech, we worked it out, some server setting that I didn’t have access to.
Last week I ran into another MODx specific problem (and the Manager helpfully displayed it) - ZIP was not enabled, something I’ve never seen on a Unix account before, so using the File Manager (or Maxi uploads) was pretty rocky, even though the site ran great. They said they didn’t want to upgrade the whole box and risk others’ sites, but they offered to move me to another server. The client actually decided to cheap out instead and host with Godummy.
Times I’ve needed a different PHP setting, Liquid’s done it for me, no problem. Just service and more service with no whining. Try that with Godummy.

The web is now strewn with newbies trying to use Godummy’s automated Wordpress install, and then being 100% helpless!
Good luck on Site5!
Dave
