Thanks! I’m looking forward to utilizing and learning as much as I can with MODX - so far this has been a sweet app - and I’m pretty impressed with it! So will harrass you folks when I got questions! smiley

You mentioned Umbraco. Sometimes we’re forced to use a Microsoft/.NET platform (despite efforts to put the site on LAMP) and as .NET CMS it looks pretty good, at least from the outside (tried an install on XP (not Server) and never got past that. From the outside it looks a little like a .NET MODx. How is it?

it is pretty similiar to Umbraco but I find ModX faster. Umbraco is a great open sourced .NET CMS. But Im at the point where I find LAMP is much more functional for me. But there are some additional steps in Umbraco that you don’t have to do in MODX that I am seeing so far. If I were to chose between the two - I’d choose ModX as of now. Umbraco is a great CMS if you want to focus on .NET side. I just find the documentation also better with MoDX than with Umbraco at this time. So the learning curve is a bit better.

I’d select MODx each time as well. However, some clients insist no LAMP and in that case, I’d like to work with a good alternative. Some clients particularly want everything in .NET. They tend to be large corporations who seem dumbfounded that anything else exists. I’ll hold Umbraco in mind for those situations in which we fail to get them to use a LAMP solution.

Hello right now im using smf but i was looking to be a bit more flexible.
I am a basic webmaster who wants to know it all and do it all but i have come to the conclusion that i know little . MODX was suggested by a friend who uses it .

Im not sure if modx is the right thing for me! Unlike my friend i have limited knowledge of coding but im no dummy i have the basics of html , I just want to get my site up and running without all the headaches so the question is how simple is it and can a impatient person do this by himself without a PHD?

I would like your honest opinion because as like you i dont want to wast your time with every 10 minnuts posting a support question.

First, it certainly won’t waste my time, or I wouldn’t be doing it in the first place. I believe the rest of the community feels the same.

MODx will work out-of-the-box for the vast majority of sites. There are add-ons for any number of site requirements, the most commonly used of these are included in the default installation. All that is necessary is to study the wiki or the included documentation of the given add-on to see how best to configure it for your purposes.

Extra coding is only necessary in a minority of cases for custom requirements, and this would certainly be the case for any other system as well. The biggest advantage to MODx is that it is extremely easy to do those custom extensions (or modify existing ones). I’ve worked on a number of sites using CubeCart, for example, and very quickly learned to thoroughly hate it.

I agree - i find MODX very easy to use - btw - SMF I wouldnt really consider it a CMS. More of a board - but it does have some slight ability but I wouldnt put it in the same category as MODX though.

I used Joomla on some sites, and some custom built php websites.

I am using Rapidweaver for the Mac at the moment and am currently in the process (with some help) of switching to Modx.
