Wait, you said 3-4 seconds. I counted maybe 1 second, 2 at worst.  rolleyes

Still vastly faster than any other system that makes you reload the page.
When I use the timeline in the Quicktime video it is 3 s from mouse click to refresh complete. Ok, now after having exact measurements I have to admit 4 secs was overstated, but that was not measured only counted.

What counts more is that you seem to be happy with the way it performs and this means there is nothing wrong with my installation.

However I still consider it unnecessary slow, in particular running modx on localhost and compared to the 0.9.6 manager interface I am used to. Maybe the "perceived slowness" is linked to the fact that the whole sidepanel on the left is erased and redrawn rather only updated like with the 0.9.6 sidepanel.

Wait a minute - I never said I was "happy with the way it performs"; on the contrary, I have implied that we are open to optimizations and are working on other solutions multiple times in this thread.

Right. I just did a test on 0.9.6 - and a normal page load takes 3 seconds. Saving a page takes 5-6. Saving a page in Revo takes at max, 2-3. With no page reload, at that.

We opted out of a frame-based interface for many reasons - the main one being that frames create more problems than they’re worth. It also puts you in a rigid structure for layouts, creates problems with tree->content interaction, prevents us from doing future 2.1+ enhancements such as Element drag/drop into content, etc.

We realize that the perception of Revo is not going to be the same as 0.9.6 (Evo). Evo’s tree does not have drag/drop compatibility, either. Nor do you get the files and elements in a tree. There are definite feature boosts in Revolution, and that adds a tiny bit of overhead to each page loading. We decided that the flexibility and features of the product mattered more than 1 extra second of page loads.

Again; we’re working on optimizations. We are open to solutions. If you would like to suggest some, I’d be glad to hear them.

I understand where you’re coming from. Instead of the loading box popping up in another frame, you’re getting the tree menu redrawing. Thankfully Revo doesn’t slow down with increasing document counts. I’ve personally found that after a brief period of just getting used to the different responses, Revo is MUCH more productive at actually managing and building sites compared through quick click-testing the UI.

If possible maybe remove the build effect...that is what seems to make the time more pronounced (and it can get annoying now that it was pointed out). I also don’t like that the menu will only keep the active sub section open on refresh (example: if you have chuncks and plugins expanded and select a plugin, when it refreshes the chunks menu will be collapsed and only the plugin tree will be expanded). After using Revo for a few days I am not sure i like the way the resources (chunks, plugins, snippets) are in the same menu as the documents. Since I can only have one section active in the menu at a time I no longer have a global view of the resources AND the documents, it is now one or the other (which is a pain when you need to get the ID of a document to use in a snippet). And if the doc tree was long then even being able to keep them both open at the same time the resources would be off screen below the documents. I also liked the tabs in the old resources section since they were readily available, no need to load between tabs...the initial page may load a bit slower but there is much less loading between actions which makes it seemingly smoother to develop with when you are jumping from chunk to snippet making adjustments. It’s not a big deal, maybe just a matter of adjusting my habits. But this was my first impression grin

That is exactly my point, and it may indeed be just getting used to it.

Page saving is indeed much faster, I can confirm that. Also having the "Save/Preview/Cancel" toolbar floating at the top of the browser window is very convenient and better than Evo where you have to scroll up. Already this will be a productivity boost.

I think we leave it there as the issue is now well understood and we are looking at a first beta version. The beta is already usable and a fine product.

Just to add my 2p to this thread (I’ve added the same to another thread on the same subject) - I’ve just upgraded to the Firefox 3.5 preview and tried my MODx installation.

Firefox loads the dashboard in a little over a second, compared to 4-5 seconds on both Firefox 3.0 and IE 8. Other data pages (such as the system configuration) load in 2 seconds, compared to 5 in Firefox 3/IE 8.

This is on an 8MB ADSL line to a Solaris 10/Apache 2.2.11/PHP 5.2.9 web server and Solaris 10/MySQL 5.1.32 database server.

                Hi,

btw, does anyone know a good & clean solution to install Chrome without the GoogleUpdate.exe (or at least without trying to upde all the time) ? i once kicked chrome off my system, and even then GoogleUpdate.exe was still active...i’m not a tinfoil-hat at all, but i like to have some control over the applications ;-)

                WinXp, Sp2

I’ve been using a browser called "Iron", which is Google Chrome, but without all the Google "phone home" rubbish. So it is the same speed & features as Chrome, but doesn’t have the googleupdate or other privacy & security concerns.

I read about it on Heise Security (amongst others), and you can get it from the creator’s site:-

                http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php

It also has an included adblocker if you want to use it.

                Hope this helps...

Thx for sharing Mike. Haven’t heard of it before, checking it out now.

                  cheers/k

I must add that I haven’t installed REVO yet, so therefore haven’t specifically used IRON (or any other browser) with the REVO manager yet, just used these browsers generally with javascript heavy pages on the web. However since the Iron makers start with the latest Google Chrome source code, then remove all the google phone home / privacy concerns, it should be identical in speed (or faster) than others have reported Chrome is for the task.

The only issue with the IRON browser, is because the updater has been removed, you have to keep an eye on their updates page to see when a new version has been released. They mirror the Google versions though, so each Google version has a corresponding IRON version. In fact they have a beta of IRON v3 available too (which is Chrome v3).

My default browser is still Firefox because of plug-ins, but I find myself clicking Iron for speed when I want a quick browse, and save Firefox for longer feature packed browsing sessions.

If you have been using Firefox 3.5 beta or Release Candidate for Revo Manager, you might want to check if you have Tracemonkey JIT (Just In Time) engine enabled for both content & browser UI. Having these enabled might help speed up the REVO manager.

To check (this only works in Firefox 3.5!), in the Firefox address bar , type:-

                    [tt]about:config[/tt] {then hit enter}

Press the "I’ll be careful" button. (Then be careful!).

A very long list if Firefox settings appears. In the Filter box at the top type:-

                    [tt]jit[/tt]

You will get just two entries:-

javascript.options.jit.chrome - (which affects javascript speed in the Firefox User Interface & plug-in extensions)
javascript.options.jit.content - (which affects javascript speed on websites)

Note if they are already true (enabled) or false (disabled). To change them, you double click on them. So if either is already false, and you want to try "true" (for speed), double click the entry. There is nothing to save, just close the page! Some say you need to close & re-open all Firefox windows, (not sure if this is true, but best to do so to be certain). If you have any problems with the faster "true" settings (or any of your plug-ins or websites break), then you can retrace your steps and return it to as it was when you found them (which for me on the Release Candidate was chrome:false & content:true, but earlier betas had them both set to false - if you are still on an earlier beta, you should upgrade anyway now!).

                    Hope this helps someone.

                    Mike
