Elements/Components/Add-ons organization

OK my first pass is complete ... still some work to do but certainly makes for interesting digging in the new categories. Found some things I’d personally like to use!

Did implement some project-specific subforums, and those further help clean things up.

Please make suggestions on titles, descriptions and next sections, and also please volunteer to help move this stuff around! I think we can essentially move a lot of the topics found in *Module, Plugin & Snippet Usage* to this new organizational structure.

Chiming in late here. I’ve had the experience of searching for and not finding existing stuff in the repository because I didn’t know what it was called and the tags didn’t match my search. Tags are great, but for newbies who aren’t really sure what they’re looking for, categories can really be helpful (especially if some items are in multiple categories). I think the "misc" problem is potentially solvable with the right categories.

It’s also a pain to try to think up all the appropriate tags when uploading a resource.

Hmmm.. Now that I think about it. How about calling them categories but treating them internally like tags?

On upload of a new resource, we could show a list of all existing "categories" with checkboxes and a "check all that apply" message. At the end of the list, would be a text box to add a new category (or categories?) which would automatically appear on the categories list in the future. This should also make it easy for people to come back and edit the applicable categories later by just checking a few more boxes.

Just when I was about to point out that the Module, Plugin & Snippet Usage still harbored the label "Support topics for Snippets, Plugins and Other Resources in the Download Repository"

The goal then is to move it all except for addons not in the repository ?
I am getting going since today I have a little time to spare contrary to the last two days...

The good thing about this would be that we actually would have a good view of those missing resources, though by now there shouldn’t be many of those among updated resources.

Edit : one thing comes to mind... correct me if I am wrong but are repository items support thread automatically created in the (now defunct) "Repository Item support" board when a new resources is added to the repository ? How will new items be handled and will we have to move those each time into the proper board ?

A quick question : we have created a FAQ board in the local support boards, but there is no such thing in the international/english board... some threads could be moved there since they answer recurring questions. It could be helpful to build an actual FAQ on modxcms.com, something which - IMHO - is missing.

Anyway, a thread like this : Is there any snippet to query tables outsite modx? could well belong in a FAQ.

In any case it does not belong in items support but rather General Support if not a FAQ...

Thoughts ?

I have been at it for more than half an hour and I have not done more than 50+ threads... between what Ryan and I moved, that’s 4 pages only out of 43 !

If we want to wrap this up we’ll need more help else it’s going to take a LOT of time to get this done... Not to mention some threads have to be moved to other boards, some have nothing to do here but belong in General Support, some in Module, Plugin & Snippet Creation and Modification...

We need to draft local moderators to do some moving, since then can move post even out of their boards.

I’m also of the opinion that we should probably hold off on the redirect post notices ... they’re really just going to wind up cluttering everything up and we can send out an announcement email along with the release of 0962 and whatever alpha 097 happens to be in at the time.

FAQ board is a great idea and yes it does take a while to move things around. The main resources thread started at 24 pages (now 9 I think) and the Modules usage started around 50 or so.

I did a lot of those at first, can someone with higher rights remove them? They are all over the place when checking for newly created posts. :O

Nah just leave ’em for now ... they’ll eventually filter out of relevancy, or I’ll hop on it next week sometime.

(I did some errors at first, just wanted the evidense of that removed! )

Should QuickEdit perhaps have it’s own board? Pretty many questions related to QuickEdit...
