SMF Mods for new forum

Considering Zi is nearly complete theming our new SMF 1.1 RC2 forums (I better not say more or I might not have hands to type with! ) its time to talk about the SMF mods we should install and test.

I vote for these 2 (or mods with similiar ideas).

IgnoreBoards --- so that users can hide language subforums that they can’t read.

IRCChat --- since someone decided to get our IRC jumpstarted for us (whether we wanted/were ready or not) we might as well make it easily accessible via this cool addition. It adds a java IRC client/server to SMF and automatically passes your Username (and access level I think) into the channel.

Please post any comments/suggestions here.

IRCChat : why not, but as discussed, we’re not really ready to handle IRC support => it should be made clear from the start.

I actually and changing my mind on the IRC stance. As long as it’s an unnofficial support channel, there’s really no harm done. There was a lot of positive stuff going on in the channel this weekend, and I think we landed a couple of new users as a result. It was also very beneficial for some quick collaboration between several team members, too!

Hey, I just stop by for a while to our forum, and I think I’m gonna throw in a few ideas. Currently, I have a lot of projects on my plate right now, but one of them will be integrating advanced web base chat system to MODx. I’m still working on phorum integration, so far the people from phorum are really friendly, and there is one of them who are willingly to make the integration for phorum to other system. Ehmn, sorry a littl ebit off topic here.

But anyway, maybe this chat integration will do us something better, because evrything is handled web based, and there is a log history for the chat as well, in case if we need to make searching capability on old log/chat. We might also be able to have user group defined as operator and etc.

Don’t take my word yet, because I think the IRC channel is working fine now. If I could have a chat system available for MODx, then we can start comparing the benefit of using my chat system. Until then, lets start with IRC first. Maybe when we have this system up, we can have a more official chat system with the same user based system.

Wendy, something to keep your eye on: Campfire from 37Signals. They’ll likely do a dang good job of making web-based chat simple and good!

Cool, I’ll check that out. Thanks for pointing that out. I almost wanting to implement my own chat system from scratch. Hehehee....

I like problem solving, so sometimes I like to create my own system design/architecture, but ended up I couldn’t finish up the system due to time constraint and less resources.

Campfire isn’t out yet and they’ve closed down the test. Most likely, it won’t be free, either, but it just might be. As with all 37Signals stuff, it will only show the absolute minimum of options, a feat they’ve mastered quite well.

My thoughts exactly why I said I thought it would be better to be clear from the start that it’s not an official support channel...

So far, the server has been unavailable, but I sure will drop by as often as possible
