New logo coming

Are we set on the new logo, as the site redesign is near completed ?

Hopefully I won’t offend anyone here (Ryan) but while I like the new site design (at least what I have seen) and the typestyle for the logo I don’t like the "box" icon at all. My instinct is that it may come off as cliche.

Out of the box thinking is one of the largest business cliche’s ever and so for me it looks like a cross between that and Open Source iconography.

I like the idea that it is open and clean but does it truly represent MODx as I understand it--not really. The icon should be able to stand alone without the text and not be able to have anyother company/product name beside it and make sense. Logos for small brands that are shifting must be unique and completely tied to the desired perception of the ideal consumer.

There are endless adjectives that could be used to describe MODx but I feel and icon that reflects its limitless flexibility (*joking* elastic band in shape of infinity symbol?) will be the winner. An origami animal, a Slinky toy, a set of blocks, interconnected rings.

The feeling I have is that MODxs logo should come from its meaning and not using a slogan or tagline to explain the "box".

That being said I don’t think that drawing out the process because there is one vote against is in the overall best interest of the project so unless we (really meaning you, Ryan) want to revisit the icon. I’d say lets move forward.

The box has indeed been used over and over and over and over. I’m definitely not upset about differences of opinion and welcome any alternatives. Another question might be do we need an icon at all? I’d prefer one personally, but obviously I’m open to pretty much anything.

I do like the treatment of the word with the split x, and its "greater than/forward progress" implication.

On the concept of the split-x what about the two vertical halves of the "X" intersecting at the vertex with each half slightly skewed on the z-index. I drew it out but I don’t like it much.

Personally I like something more artistic. This comes off as a little techie and not as mature.

I’ll think on it. If I wasn’t too lazy to bring my scanner back upstairs I mignt share a few sketches.

You know an single stylized greater than symbol might do the trick since it represents the opening of an element in PHP, HTML and more as well as the forward notion and then there is the idea that MODx is greater than...

Hmm...

I think the diagonal split-x is way too 80s-ish for me.

I like the somewhat-techie but classy "greater than" x sign a lot. To me, it implies professionalism.

Just for laughs I drew this with my mouse - I promise I won’t do it again for a long long time
It’s an X, it has the infinity sign, it also has php’s "modulus" operator - the percent sign.
And maybe it looks like something taking off in flight.
.. just to keep the ideas flowing. I do like the greater than symbol idea too, though.

As I said, didn’t like it at all. I would have drawn a concept in pen but my scanner is downstairs.

Obviously the greater than symbol is NOT the open part of the tag (not enough coffee yet.) Not sure where to take this. I had an idea...

The one from netProphET kind of reminds me of the commercial for the drug targeting people with restless leg syndrome; I wonder if it would increase the urges to gamble and have sex, too? If not, it would still make a great ad campaign...

I think I’ll go back to building out a client site for a while.
