0.9.2 ... Let the games begin

I just download TinyMCE 2.0.3 and take a look at the license and I found this "TinyMCE License (LGPL)"

I thought LGPL is also opensource, no?

Yes, LGPL is Open Source. It is the Lesser GPL, and is less restrictive. It is usually used for libraries and external applications that are linked to or run by another program, so a CMS doesn’t need to be GPL or any other Open Source license (there are several, Apache and BSD are fairly well-known examples; Microsoft uses the BSD TCP/IP code for its networking) to use it.

Open Source, and specifically the GPL, does not mean you can’t charge money for it, it means the source code is available, and once you get your hands on it you can do pretty much whatever you want with it. That’s what is meant by "Free as in speech, not free as in beer." With GPL if you use the code in your own program you have to relase your program under the GPL as well, with BSD you do not. That’s why Microsoft could use the BSD code.

I can bundle up MODx and put it on a CD in a box and sell it if I want (and anybody is clueless enough to buy it). I can put it up for download on a subscription-only basis. But I can’t call it something else, or claim that I wrote it, and I can’t make any restrictions on what my customer can do with it after he buys it. It’s GPL and it stays GPL, and any modifications or additions to it must be GPL as well.

I worked for a company that switched to Linux (which is pretty much the poster child of the GPL). Their IT manager gave me the latest copies of Red Hat Linux they had purchased, and one of the other managers found out. He was furious, and could not understand that this was quite legal, and the only reason they bought it from Red Hat instead of simply downloading it for free was that they bought it with support. The copies the IT manager is free to give to whomever he pleases do not include that support. Actually, it was kind of funny, because their initial trial server was set up with a copy of an earlier Red Hat Linux that I had given them! Our IT manager was one of the top four Solaris gurus in the country, a Frenchman, and I had to laugh when he came to me with a big grin and said "This is so easy! It’s just like Solaris!"

So with LGPL we should be able to integrate TinyMCE with MODx just like we did with FCK if we want it to, right?

It would be a nice addition for people that want to have a choice on the editor.

Ok...above are some of the things I’ll be playing with.

I’m going to play with the layout I created for the manager and see if I can tweak it to include some of the things that others have made. Hopefully we can all come to an agreement on whether we like it or not. I would love to get a better default manager color scheme and such. Would be nice to step more away from the Eto look.

I’ll need to look at the TV form objects and see if there was anything I was going to add or change. Can’t think of anything at the moment so I’ll need to go back and look at my "notes".

Yes, with the LGPL license, we can bundle TinyMCE with MODx with no issues. Personally, I would like to bundle TinyMCE with MODx instead of offering it up as a separate download. We can still keep FCKEditor in there...but I would like to make TinyMCE the default. FCKEditor just seems too fussy for some novice users.

Also someone say that there is a misspell like this "Sign Up for Full Site Priveleges" can we correct this for the next release?

Looks like I need to start working on getting the QE apply feature working with Tiny. It was pretty simple to get it working for FCK, hopefully it won’t take me long.

TinyMCE bundled would be great, FCK really wrecks the page’s code

The only thing that we need to come up with to make it a full replacement for FCK is a replacement for MCFileManager and MCImageManager plugins for TinyMCE. Of course, anyone can buy those, but it would be nice to have a better than FCK solution integrated with MODx.

I remember we talked about having a file manager and image manager for MODx but don’t have the thread to link to...

I’ve reorganized and updated the list in the head of this thread for those interested in following it. First international install fix build is now available... let the testing begin!

I’ll do just that this week-end !

Looking forward to the international install fix, will do installs on multiple french host and local configs...
