I would also say Foxycart is a pretty affordable shop option. Some costs associated with a normal cart:
    $4-$10 per month - SSL
$4-$6 per month - Dedicated IP

So you’re saving these costs ($8-$16 per month) and getting an awesome hosted solution (and hosted can be a huge plus in you dont have to worry about security, upgrades, support).

Thanks Dimmy. I guess this will force me to learn PHP finally smiley

Chuck, regarding the Foxycart, I guess I just have to wait til I am certain the shop I am going to build can bring in solid sales each month before I consider to commit to a monthly fee. Will only use paypal for the moment therefor no SSL needed.

Thanks for the feedback on Foxycart anyway!

this isn’t really for myself but I may change my mind if I can see the foxy cart in action (not just the example at foxy site).

A friend was asking me for shopping cart recommendation for her site; she doesn’t use Modx but static html and since foxy cart is highly recommended I would like to learn more about it because it claims to be working with any site. But with all these praise, I am not able to find a link to a site that uses foxy cart, not from here, not from the foxys site.

Can you provide a link or two? Many thanks!

I IM Brett but haven’t get his response yet.

Does anyone know if you can use any other language than english in Foxycart? Not just for your product / catalogue sites - that’s entirely up to you of course - but the following screens: view cart / checkout / enter address / button texts etc.

Using foxycart for german or french speaking audiences would scare 90% of them away, I’m sure...

There are a few others as well that we’ll list as soon as we launch our redesign, which should be very soon.

Please chime in on this thread in our forum and let us know what you’d like to see (in addition to language customization) for German and French stores. Currently this isn’t fully possible, but it’s definitely towards the top of our list of things to do (and if you’ve been watching, you know that happens fast wink ). We want to give better payment gateway and shipping options to international customers as well, so please let us know on our forum.

We just added custom fields on checkout (oops, done but not live), pretty neat error reporting (in the backend), totally customizable HTML + text email options (with the ability to remove the receipt section from category-specific emails). We’re also finishing up our redesign, which should make the admin *much* easier to use.

As always, just let us know (here or on our forums) if there are any questions you have. -Brett

Hi Brett, I probably should post this to foxycart, but I also like to learn/hear about how Modx users/community opinon.

I am not a full time web designer as I also have another small business that needs my attention and time; on the other hand, as a web designer I think I am pretty good with my work and always wanting to learn more, be informed etc. I had my friend looked at your foxy cart and explained to her on everything I have learned about foxy cart from Modx community (note: I get a feeling that Modx is going to have a ’marriage’ with foxycart somewhere down the road therefor I feel it’s ok for me to post my thought here) , it so happens I was preparing a quote for a potential customer who needs a shopping cart soluiton, therefor last week had been a shopping cart orientation/education week for me. I realize I know too little...although I am still a newbie to Modx, but I will not hestitate to talk any potential clients and friends into using the Modx for the reason that I had tested at least 6 CMSs in the past two years to finally have my site developed in Modx, but I found I couldn’t bring myself to recommend Modx to my friend and the potential client I was preparing the quote for. Why? because I am not seeing a very important feature, the ecommerce they desperately needed.

I finally signed up the Foxycart trail version as you have already noticed, I like what I saw and tested so far, but I don’t see something that my friend and the potential cllient wanted, maybe I totally missed it or it simply isn’t clear in your doc. My friend is willing to pay a good money for a shopping cart solution, she even went this far to have programmars quoted her a custom built shopping cart that costs two 17" Macbook Pro plus extra monthly fee. She is a designer herself, not web design though; she did her own design and made her site from Dreamweaver, but she didn’t know she can acutally pay someone to convert the site to a CMS with a roboust shopping cart module/plugin and it will actually cost her less than the custom built shopping cart plus a static html site. Many of the features she was looking, are standard built-in in CMS. So I told her to consider paying someone to convert her site to CMS and then hire a programmar writes a plugin or look for a robost shopping cart module that can integrate to whatever CMS she ends up using. She needs the cart be expandable, flexible and portable, and she only want it hosted in her server ( because of this Foxycart won’t work); she needs the cart for both retail and wholesales (can be private user login or open but the script able to differential whether ta customer is wholesale or retail customer based on the info the buyer entered - it can be pre-registere or configure with parameter); she also want the cart be able to built loyalty program an generates report and she wants to have the option to offer gift certificate, not just coupon.

I told her to look into EE and perhaps she can hire a developer there to write a module; I learned about Magento that is due for release in few months and told her maybe to wait for few more months if she can.

As other Modx users pointed, your cart offers lots of possibility and flexibility and I truly like what I saw so far. I think it’s unfair for me to make a judgement that you cart is only good for people who need BIN paypal button, yet I don’t see the feature that my friend and potentail client wanted - the fact that it’s subdomain.foxycart.com put them off, despite I told them that this can be solved with URL re-direction (?). I usually don’t give my insignificant 2 cent to developers and companies because they know their stuff much better than me, but knowning that Foxycart is still in beta and you are really sincere for feedback, I thought I told you this. So, on behald of my friend, would it be possible that you offer diferent pricing and licensing structure? And would the features they wanted be delivered ?

Foxycart can securely hosted on a subdomain of your domain, but it’s definitely a hosted solution on their servers and will not be installable I’d be willing to bet. I love the MODx/Foxy combo, but there’s no official union or anything. smiley

Licensed software is just not their business model. From a payment perspective, you don’t even know that Paypal is an option because it uses the Pro checkout version. I’ve also got one store running with Authorize.net too. I understand other payment processors are coming.

Multiple pricing levels are also doable with the MODx/Foxy combo. The only thing I see possibly lacking is the loyalty program, but not knowing what that consists of, I’d need some additional info before I could offer advice. I bet it could be achieved with some custom coding and taking advantage of their advanced JSON/XML capabilities.

I didn’t ask her in detail but I think I know what she referred to. Recently I made a purchase from this website : actionenvelope.com, it has a loyalty program, and you can see how many points you are given from your purchase by loggin in to ’my account’, you can also see the recent orders you have made ( I know this is not something a new feature), the status and track shipping ( I think this one is pretty useless for many small ecommere sites because they simply don’t have the resources to enter the tracking number after an order is shipped - I got very frustrated few times with companies that have this option in their carts). With each new purchase you made, points will be added depending on the amount you ordered.

The loyalty program structured in such way:
                  Bronze - X points receive a 5% discount
                  Silver- Y points receive a 7% discount
Gold - XY points receive a 10% discount
Platinum - XXX points + 10% discount plus secret benefits

This program is included in the member signup, which is required upon checkout, it doesn’t need a customer fills up another form to apply.

We launched the ability to have your own custom domains (like store.yourdomain.com) about a month ago. There’s a small additional fee to cover the security certificate (which you’d need to pay for anyway), but other than that it’s a simple CNAME record in your DNS.

If the question is "Can I install FoxyCart on my own server?", the answer is "not currently". If the question is "Can I completely and fully integrate FoxyCart with my site, including a domain like checkout.mydomain.com?" the answer is "yes, definitely."

Coupon codes and gift certificates are coming soon. No promises on a date, but if you’re keeping track, we’re rolling out new features all the time.

As Ryan mentioned, this is entirely possible with the XML datafeeds and MODx’s webuser management. You’d need to know a little PHP to make it happen, but conceptually it’s not that tough at all. XML creates or updates MODx user; price would be displayed with a snippet to check webuser’s status and manipulate the price accordingly.

For those of you with shops already leveraging FoxyCart, do you handle pricing solely from FoxyCart’s end? In other words, anywhere you SHOW a price/cost of an item, it is sourced from foxycart (XML feed?) and not from MODx (e.g. Template Variable) ?

Just trying to get a feel for an ideal setup with minimal effort for maintaining product images/prices.
