      I’d add a clearfix to your CSS and the add the class="clearfix" to outer div.

      So
      <div class="clearfix" id="outer">

      and to you default CSS add:

      .clearfix:after {
      	content: ".";
      	display: block;
      	clear: both;
      	visibility: hidden;
      	line-height: 0;
      	height: 0;
      }

      .clearfix {
      	display: inline-block;
      }

      html[xmlns] .clearfix {
      	display: block;
      }

      * html .clearfix {
      	height: 1%;
      }

      Google clearfix for more info on this and why FF behaves this way.

      But you should still sort out the issues Susan mentioned above.

          I’d still try to get the html valid... it’s usually not that much work...

          Did you by any chance set the picture description to
          "<a href='/gallery/assets/galleries/27/dsc_0274.jpg'>Download picture</a>"

          or something that generates that like
          <a href='[+maxigallery.path_to_gal+][+maxigallery.picture.filename+]'>Download picture</a>
          ?

          Or your "click_to_zoom" string to the link?

          If either of the two above, that’ll be causing the problem of the snippets of code you posted.
