Well, if you so against CMS in the name then prefix it or sufix Modx with something will do:

    CleverModX.org
    ModxClever.org
    ModxOpen.org
    OpenModx.org
    ModxGeek.org
    GeekModx.org

    Ton of names!

The importance thing is pick a theme, a starting point not just keep on and on...

Modx as modular and extensible is a good idea.

I have sent emails to the WHOIS contacts for both modx.com and modx.org, just in case either would be willing to give theirs up in the public interest. You don't know until you ask, right? Maybe if they want $100 or so we could take a collection.

If not, a few other options with open .com and .org extensions:

      modx1, modx2 etc. (idea borrowed from typo3)
      modextra
      modextend
      modxm, modxs, etc

Not really against the idea of CMS in the name, it's just that I thought that CMS might give the wrong impression of what MODx could and might be.

So my question at the moment is MODx a CMS or is it something more?

hehe, we need a few more comments to get more ideas going!

I guess I will take the minority view and say that I'm not really fond of "MODx" as the name, simply because if I wasn't involved here, it doesn't convey anything at all to me.

And being a techy type, if I hadn't heard of it before, I'd automatically assume that it was a modification FOR something rather than being a complete system itself.

And, despite being here and having seen it around for quite a while, I *still* have no idea what it means, which strikes me as making it slightly hard to market.

However, all that being said, I'm not sure those aren't things that couldn't be overcome.

Tossing a few pennies back at the thread...

I'm in favor of keeping "CMS", "Open" or "OS" out of the name after sleeping on it for a few days now. (Where or not those or something similar show up in the URL for the name is another issue entirely. Getting a decent URL these days is nearly impossible, it seems)

And to thoroughly beat a dead horse, the name should be catch, simple to spell and remember, and not "cute". If it consists of more than one word, shouldn't be easy to get confused and reverse the word order.

Naming is very tough business which shouldn't be taken lightly or done hurriedly, despite my proclivity for wanting to check another item off the list. wink

To me Eto****'s real draw is that it's fairly simple and intuitive. It also seemed to have a much lighter and fun feel to it, like Mambo while other CMSes have a much more serious, professional, high-tech and complex feel.

With that in mind (laugh if you like) how 'bout...

                site-o-matic

To me it catches your attention and says fun and easy. I can invision a whole retro '50s commercial look. site-o-matic.com is taken but site-o-matic.net and site-o-matic.org are open.

                  What about:

                  tidyX
                  etoscape

Both are available in all domain forms
