I’m 99.9% certain that OS X will continue to be BSD-based.

Because Jordan Hubbard, one of the creators of FreeBSD and currently a manager of Apple’s Darwin project.

Other point, the BSD licence is better to apple

I’ve been thinking about moving from XP to Ubuntu myself, but I have about 300 GB of Windows software and I don’t know what I’d do without it all...

Of course that’s just Office 2007...

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Ubuntu indeed, but is it (at last) a user friendly linux distro ? I mean I am not by far afraid of learning but my latest experience with a Linux distro (Mandrake 10.0) was not to the point where I would have totally switched to Linux (I had a dual boot Mandrake / XP system before coming to OS X). Even if hardware support was much better, it was nowhere near XP (and now Vista even more).

I’ll try MacUnbutu some day !

It would be great to have a real alternative to Windows for laymen on PCs (though you could build a Hackinstosh, but that’s not for laymen and that’s not legal...)

I seriously doubt I’m going to switch to Vista in the near future. It just seems incredibly bloated to me, and I don’t see what real benefit I get for watching that hourglass so much more. I guess I can stick with XP for a couple more years or so, and then maybe move to the next Windows Server distribution if I don’t decide to jump to Linux.

I’m afraid of Vista. 

Usually I like to know all applications I have installed, and have a nice, clean, small and fast system.
But I really can’t explain why MS decided to use a minimum harddisk space requierment of ~10GB minimum.
And I think no explanation would make Vista better. I have tried it, (legaly) It wastes too much of my Harddisk and ressources. OK it’s faster than XP, but there’s no reason to spy me all the time, with Vista’s inbuilt spy mechanisms.


Indeed I’ve heard a lot of good things about Ubuntu also, I’ve even seen it in action on a laptop of a friend.

I like tweaking and pimping visuals and optics of my xp-box, and so there was no use for something like Vista, except DX10!!
But when I saw this effects on his sweet little laptop, with an old nvidia grapics card only 256memory and about 2.8GHz, I was really shocked!

It even worked flawless, or do you say fluid?


I will wait, and ubuntu will become more popular and just better.
You should know that a Billionaire is financing this project, to help africans getting a zero cost OS. He’s soo Human, and that’s the name of Ubuntu’s visual styles and look.

This wins the award for the silliest thing I’ve read all day. Sorry aour, but there’s simply no way that Apple is switching out the underlying kernel of OSX to a Linux one. Not only are the technical issues insanely difficult (and not worth doing), but the licensing issues would drastically change how Apple does business.

I spent some time trying out Ubuntu’s latest (Feisty Fawn) this morning. It’s a very tight distribution! If I get a laptop for traveling I’m going to try it out there and see if I can live without Windows (we’ll see if Photoshop runs via CrossOver Office).

Now that video is tempting me to seriously try Ubuntu ..

You can download the CD and try it without installing, which is nice. And GimpShop makes The Gimp look almost exactly like Photoshop (The Gimp as it usually is makes my head hurt). I also like the Beryl skin manager a lot.

Uh oh I may have to dual boot my desktop PC...

If only I had a few extra hours to kill this week...
