Windows Vista faster than Max OS X on a MacBook Pro

I have done a little experimenting with... Bootcamp 1.2, after having bought Parallels and enjoying switching without rebooting between OS X and Vista. I needed more speed, especially for Office 2007 and also, let’s confess to try out some games on my MacBook Pro 17" (Core Duo 2,16Ghz, 2Gb RAM, 256Mb ATI X1600 and 120Gb drive).

So far, I had only done some website testing with Parallels, to check out how my websites performed with IE7. I didn’t feel the need to really test drive Vista, being so happy with OS X. Yet, since I installed bootcamp and Vista running natively, I cheked it out more intensively and found that it was overall significantly faster than OS X Overall apps launching time, even browsing (true, I mainly use FF and FF/Mac is slower than FF/Win. And yes, Safari is a lot faster on OS X) - is way faster with Vista. I don’t get it. It’s not that my OS X is not optimized : it is, and I have compared from a clean install of both OS (just re-installed my system).

Of course, OS X is still a much safer OS and overall, I like OS X’s feel a lot better (except for the limitations of Apple’s Finder, especially moving files and cut/paste...).
Yet, this is really disturbing and I can only hope Apple with improve performance with OS X 10.5 aka Leopard...

Did anyone notice the same thing ?

Well, I doesn’t only have to do with how well Apple optimizes OS X (though they can probably do a lot more) but also how well optimized 3rd party applications are - in your case FF (which has been sluggish since 2.0 on OS X) and Office 2007 (which loads in rosetta). The Finder though is something Apple really needs to work on ’cause it’s soo extremely slow sometimes...

My main os is Ubuntu! It is faster than any bloat from apple or ms!
I’ve Windows XP and use OSX Virtually and I can say OSX is fast, but Windows runs faster in a VMachine than OSX.
This is not an issue with the UNIX kernel, it is an issue with the Window and Dekstop Engine.

I must say I managed to push windows to start withing seconds and be fully *there* in a VMachine.
But OSX needs more time than Win32. But I don’t care, OSX looks really really stylish and my Win32 machine can emulate most effects etc of OSX, But I’ve about 45apps running on start then.

The man behind Ubuntu is soo cool, he is billionaire and spends his money on making the best and easiest linux ever for africans.
The poor africans have not money to buy an os, and even if they had, howto buy a computer then?
Nobody cares about this *forgotten* continent, the newspapers show so rarely information about the current status in africa.
We should all help those poor people.

You mean Office 2004 (OS X has a 2007 ?) yeah I know it’s Rosetta the activity monitor display which type of app (PPC or Intel) is run. FF : I agree as I said, that FF is sluggish.

Maybe 2Gb RAM is not enough to have OS X fly !
Anyway, I’ll soon won’t have this problem since I am thinking of buying a Mac Pro (dual Xeon 5100 @2,66GHz). We’ll see !

I don’t know where the future of Mac is going, but I liked the old OSX more, it was less hungry.
I know Office 2007 installed it on my virtual mac also, but I didn’t liked working with Mac, because the more optical gimmicks the more it seduces to click and tune and test and waste your time on something useless. Just my opinion, but I don’t compare OSX to other OS, it is superior, but I think Ubuntu will be more superior in a year or so.

Actual OSX is a freebsd kernel.
Next version will be a linux one.

Didn’t know that Leopard what moving from Freebsd to a linux kernel... I know they have a lot of problems with it in the meantime...
Will that mean increased performance ?

I’m 99.9% certain that OS X will continue to be BSD-based.

Would be awesome! I hope the license of the LINUX KERNEL will force apple to open it’s source and make the OS free to download.
But everybody else without internet can buy it in a box and can get support as usual in the linux world..
