Serious Firefox Speed-up

set the filter to "pipelining".

Set the booleans to "true" and the integer to 16.

And make sure you have a working fire extinguisher!!!

What this does is instead of sending a request for a file, waiting for it, then sending the request for the next file...ad nauseum, it requests the files one right after the other (up to 16 files, such as css files, image files, js files etc) as soon as it sees a need for them, organizing the returned packets as appropriate. A conforming server will fill up its response packets to full size with the requested files, instead of sending partially-filled packets for each individual file, thus speeding up the entire Internet and reducing bandwidth.

1. You can actually search the about:config for the pipelining value.

2. Just use the FasterFox extension. It automates all of the firefox speed tweaks and gives you oh so much more...

well i have fasterfox churning on my firefox browser and *yawns* it’s still the 2nd slowest browser on the planet next to IE
I guess no need for a fire extinquisher perhaps a fire needs to be lite under the fox to make it go faster lol

I still don’t get what people see in FF, but its better than IE so all hail the fox, Safari is still the fire rocket of choice for me

Though like Mark I use FasterFox and if you use custom setting, you can edit the pipelining value (defaults to 6 with FasterFox).

@bugsmi0 : extensions alone would justify FireFox, it makes FF so powerful... about speed : I didn’t notice tha Safari was that fast, or faster than FF for that matter, could anyone confirm that ? But I do think Opera is a bit faster... (didn’t check loading times though, just an impression...).

The main difference I see between FF and Safari speed is for initial startup. When I startup Safari, it loads almost immediately. FF usually takes about 5-10 seconds to startup. After startup, it seems fine tho.

Agree about initial startup, though it is not that long for me, but then again I got a MacBook Pro 17" with 2Gb RAM, FF takes about 2/3 seconds to launch...

Do you run Bootcamp or Parallels? If so, how is that for you? I was thinking about it.

Parallels rocks. I use it daily.

I have discovered Parallels thanks to Ryan and I must say it rocks indeed ! I bought the license for Mac Workstation, it’s just great because you don’t have to reboot, you can have multiple systems, and the amazing thing is Windows is running darn fast too...

I confess I didn’t test BootCamp because of the performance and security issues mentionned here and there... but my understanding is Leopard will ship with the ability to boot Windows, things might improve by then.
