Yes, that’s correct.
If you have a Windows XP disc prior to SP2 it comes with IE6.
You can set up as many VM’s as you want.
I only have Mac Mini and the 1GB of RAM meant everything ran slow but I upgraded to 4GB and it flies now.
Personally I think it runs most of the Windows programs as fast as the higher spec Windows box.

Actually legally you can run a single disc install on two+ instances of the same install called snapshots. You can legally install XP SP2 with IE6 take a snapshot then upgrade to sp3 and IE7 take a snapshot and then upgrade to IE8 BEta and take a snapshot. It is one install but running as seperate instances. It doesn’t break the license as you’ve only installed on real VM.

I run IETester, it works well and seemed to be the only reliable solution for my Windows Vista PC.

I hate IE6, hopefully by the end of 2009 we will be able to drop support

I do the same thing (on Ubuntu) when I really want to test something properly on IE. Otherwise I just use browsershots or borrow my partner’s Vista laptop for a bit. There’s no way I’d actually keep a physical machine around with IE6 on it, since that would just be encouraging the beast.

I used to use that on XP, but now I run vista can’t, and I don’t think IE6 is worth having aseperat install for it.

Microsoft dropped support for IE6 years ago and I can’t wait till all businesses are forced to upgrade to IE7 or 8

IE sucks

I personally run VMware Fusion w/ XP and Multiple IEs.

I also have a separate VMware instance running Windows 7 Beta that comes with IE 8 (beta2)...
I couldn’t believe their newest "feature": Compatibility View. There is an option to "Run all websites in Compatibility View" (aka Keep IE6 alive FOREVER!)

Will the nightmare ever end?

Well, I looked into the whole snapshot thing with Fusion. So far it works like a charm.

I went thought the bizare series of upgrades upon ugrades upon udates to finally get to the Service Pack 3 install. After that I downloaded IE7 and then downloaded the update to that.

In the end it looks like I have a pretty easy way of switching between IE6 and IE7. Thanks to Jay and David for shedding the light on this for me. I would prefer to not have to hunt down another machine. This looks like a real working alternative...

I think one of the reasons that IE6 is hanging around so long is that there are probably zillions of copies of Windows with questionable COA licenses. People can’t upgrade to IE7 without the Microsoft gotcha. Then there are those folks who just resist upgrading with the fear of "if it ain’t broke don’t fix it" syndrome (they may have a point though)

Of course the above groups are not the best demographic we want to be building websites for...
