Google Chrome: web browser from Google

just installed it and loving it! now if only i could my firefox extensions across......

it has a decent elegant code inspector.....though it’s no web developer or firebug

This is awesome. I just read the book. If they can deliver on their goals- it might be good enough to end the dreadful reign of ie6.

Imagine if someone opens up google.com or gmail and sees ’advanced uses it gets from google chrome’. No one has a better opportunity to move users from ie6 than google. Most people’s homepage! And if they knock out the security like they want- then enterprises will ’almost need’ it.

I wonder how this will affect current web apps like us, but if everything is open sourced then MODx could potentially benefit from it too if there is really an edge to build rich applications easily then it will change the whole browser game...

The Wired article is interresting, particularly "Inside Chrome: The Secret Project to Crush IE and Remake the Web". My favorite phrase is "Google hopes to kick-start a new generation of Web-based applications that will truly make Microsoft’s worst nightmare a reality: The browser will become the equivalent of an operating system." Of course I don’t like being dependent of anyone Google or Microsoft, but the main thing is that Google has started a new concept for a browser and others will sure follow (that is, if they can... is the V8 javascript engine also open sourced ? if so it would mean js 10x faster for every browser, cool !).

In the meantime, I play with Parallels to run it... but sure it will be better when we have it on Mac !

Its very nice! and js based webpages eg. modx manager is damn fast on this.. Just looking forward to have addons available for it like web developer toolbar etc.

Just remember guys and gals Google Chrome is still a beta.

While most reviews have been positive, they all point out a few omissions and bugs with it. (But Google being Goolge they will inevitably fix them and make it better.)

I have a PC, so I’m waiting for the Linux version...

It’s even fast in a virtual machine, and it renders complicated pages perfectly as far as I’ve seen so far (no standards glitches at all, and Javascript running as intended).

Beta or not, I’d probably use it for Gmail and other Google Apps if I weren’t addicted to Better Gmail and Stylish for those (as well as the Todoist Sidebar).

I’m concerned about Google becoming the monopoly too. But it’s licensed as BSD, so if they do anything evil, then someone -even mozilla- could fork it and take out the ’evil’. So I’m not concerned. If they start inserting obtrusive ads, it’s open source and someone will patch it.

I just read this article and I am not sure this is a fair and impartial review... might sound like one, since there are both strong and weak points listed, but still a bit too much IE8 praise for my taste

I didn’t time IE8 and Chrome but on my computer (iMac 20" with Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz 4Gb RAM), Chrome is way faster ! It’s even faster than Safari which was the first thing to strike me upon first launch.

The test they did with more than 30 windows opened might not be the best choice for a typical browsing experience  Sure there are some rough edges but it’s a beta and V8 executes js way faster than any engine, which is a very good thing for websites/web apps using js frameworks extensively. This is a key component of speed for me and shouldn’t be under-estimated.

About EULA

Read carefully, it starts with "You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services". I am not sure that what follows applies to content submitted through Chrome but rather through Google’s services (gmail, analytics... etc). I think this is because Google has (or plans) to integrate enhanced version of thoses services for Chrome only (thanks to V8).

Don’t jump to conclusions... lots of conspiracy theories (such as this one) already around Google but like Chuck said, Chrome is open source which means someone else could pick up the codebase and offer an alternative browser as fast as Chrome (Mozilla ?).

Why get a PC while a Mac can either boot Windows with BootCamp or better without rebooting use Parallels, it’s fast !
