As of now, you can download the Google Chrome webbrowser (beta). I mention this because some people here might find it interesting, since it focuses on ’heavy’ (javascript, ajax etc.) websites, for example of course Gmail.

But also I’ve been using it with the modX manager (admin interface) and it almost litterary flies using this browser. Your Mileage May Vary of course.

Google has made a rather need comic explaining the how and why:

Pretty snappy. Paging through the System Settings is a whole lot faster.

Logging in to the Revolution Manager crashed my XAMPP Apache server the first time but it hasn’t happened since. This sometimes happens in IE7 also, so it’s probably not a problem with Chrome.

Sadly, no Roboform support as yet though it’s probably coming soon.

The web is buzzing this past few days about Google’s new browser, aka Chrome, some are even interpreting it’s logo as a sign of Google’s intention to dominate (conspiracy theory, quite funny actually)

Anyway, for those who have not yet downloaded the browser which might kill IE (hurray to that !), I wondered if some of you had done extensive testing of websites and how compliant Chrome is and also how does it behave, since it doesn’t seem to pack either Webkit or Mozilla’s engine but a totally new one...

I am just downloading it right now, and will do a quick check after installing on my Parallels virtual machine (yes, Chrome is only available for windows user at the moment... we Mac users have to wait, and Linux boys too undecided )

Anyway, Google chose to go open source with Chrome and that’s great !

It sure will stir up Microsoft and you can count on them to become a X factor in the browser game... I just hope Chrome is standard compliant and won’t add another layer of work to webdesign...

        What do you think ?

Edit : Installed and quick test drive, Chrome is FAST ! Checked my websites and everything is fine, from multi-level CSS menus to mootools and jquery effects. MODx manager is really fast too, good news !!!  Now I’ll check a few other site I know and app I use...

Edit 2 : thanks ZAP for merging both threads, should have thought of it !

Installed it a few minutes ago. For some days now it will be my standard browser. It’s just fast.

I guess Google will be able to collect even more of my browers habits, but I don’t actually care. I hav nothing to hide. smiley

The only scary thing is that it copied all of my Firefox info over to Chrome, included the passwords. That means it can also be copied over to anywhere else.
I think, thererfor I am! But what I am, and why...?

Oops it would seem I posted a similar topic in the webdesign forum] didn’t see this one...

            [edit by ZAP: topics merged]

Just installed and yes pretty snappy, in fact just about the fastest rendering I think !
Indeed MODx manager is working great with Chrome and that’s great news grin
All my websites are rendering OK too, which is good news.

The main hope I have with it is that it will disrupt the domination of the non compliant ugly IE tongue
Maybe we’ll end up getting rid of IE, or push MS to really build a compliant browser...at last !

I love the keeping each tab in an isolated "sandbox", we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another approach not to mention the "We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser." If that’s true, then we are in business for a real browser improvement !

All would be perfect if we had the Mac and Linux versions available but no doubt this will come in time...

The CodePress & EditArea plugins don’t seem to work when you use Google Chrome.
In fact some of the content TV’s aren’t even editable!

It does in fact use WebKit. You can read all about it here:
