I agree what some say about the need for a more user friendly template system.
Modx is good for developers but most people will have difficulty setting it up without step by step instructionrs. Any CMS should be built with the end user in mind. Most people don’t know what a chunk is or a snippet, copy/past html for template building seems primitive. I would rather have a simple template install system that gets the template loaded with the click of a button then have it so you can make modificaitons if need be.
This is my fault, as I’ve not done a good job in explaining MODx’s simplicity regarding templating obviously. And for what it’s worth, MODx is definitely not trying to be a beginner’s CMS. The fact that we have a system that happens to be pretty simple to use is just a bonus; we’re really focused on advanced users right now (not to say that we don’t love our less techno-inclined, ’cause we do and that’s what provides our motivation to clean it up and make it simpler!

).
The key thing is as it relates to this thread though is that there IS NO templating system in the traditional sense per se. You simply build XHTML/CSS layouts and replace your content area with [*content*] and your navigaion area with [[DropMenu? &...]] and then toss in a bit of CSS and you’re done.
MODx does not force another templating system learning experience. It just allows people to use XHTML and CSS as the "template langage".
I don’t really understand how it can be made much simpler. We’re certainly not trying to be Dreamweaver, Front Page or any of the other similar solutions. If you need that type of functionality, Adobe or Microsoft + pretty much any shared hosting provider is very much your friend.
Happy MODxing.
