What is missing here is a large number of already made templates. I would like to thank all the people who already took the time to give us templates, my point is not in being ungrateful, it is just that we don’t have much choice. One of my prospect, not fully convinced yet by MODx/Etomite, wants to have a look at different styles or templates in order to make a choice, and I can’t even do that properly undecided
Does anyone know of a website offering or selling MODx/Etomite templates ?

I’m not aware of any. The beauty of MODx though is that you can go to a place like TemplateMonster.com, pick out a template (with HTML already done) and in a matter of hours have a completed website. All it takes is replacing placeholder text in the HTML template with [*content*] and maybe creating a TV or two.

It’s just that easy! Simply put, MODx doesn’t limit you in any way that makes it difficult to build any type or look of site you want to build. smiley

        Thanks for your answer but...
I tried to adapt a few templates, but the look and feel (especially menus) is not always that great when used through MODx. In order to get "quality", we need REAL MODx templates...

The thing is that you don’t choose MODx because the webpages look good. You can achieve the same look with every CMS.
You choose MODx because you like the functionality, extensibility etc.

"Quality" comes from the designer, not from pre-built templates. Honestly, the thing you don’t like about MODx is the very thing that drove me to it. I’ve looked at alot of different CMS’: Mambo, Subdreamer, Drupal, Geeklog, Postnuke, Xaraya, Typo3, and Xoops...just to name a few. All of these have one thing in common...they all use their own proprietary template system. Creating a template from scratch on just about any one of these CMS’ can be a real pain in the ass. Sure...there are prebuilt templates you can download and use...but even then, altering an existing template can be quite a task as well.

However, with MODx creating your own template or an existing template is pretty easy. Menus and things like that will take a little time to figure out. Most menus in MODx are outputted as lists, which are pretty easy to style with good ole’ CSS. Just about any templates look and feel can be adapted to handle a particular MODx snippet; it’s all in the planning. Once you understand what is being outputted by the snippets and such, the rest is all in the hands of the developer/designer. The point is that if you’re already used to building static websites and you are knowledgeable with DHTML and CSS, you shouldn’t have any problems creating a site with MODx, template or otherwise.

              Everyone has a good points!

Modx is great for developer/designer to do whatever they want to make their site look the way they want and that is where Modx excel!

On the other hand not everyone is developer and designer and to bring Modx to the mass it needs to be more. It needs many prebuild parts and readily available for people to download and to easily install to their Modx installation. Otherwise the adoption rate by the mass from Mambo, php-Nuke, etc would be difficult!

              My 2 cents!

I have released a Template Changer plugin, and am working on a very simple tutorial for creating templates and setting up the Template Changer for just that purpose. Here’s a package of templates I’ve worked up; you’ll have to provide your own background images. It’s all in the CSS!

Look for some sample tutorials soon on using MODx’s soon-to-be-released DropMenu to emulate different menu styles. Here’s a few very varied looks at styling different "stock" menus straight out of MODx. All these menues were what led to the development of the DropMenu snippet:
