I think the MODxCART should use xPDO... otherwise it will be obsolete shortly!
As for features in the shop and in the admin, take a look at ZenCart, in my opinnion
the best ecommerce cart there is...
if we could MODx-ify ZenCart, it would be perfect... I am not talking about an integration
but having ShopX or MODxCart with all the features of ZenCart and all the technology
of MODx... wow... that would be the best...
Indeed. Once 0.9.7 (xPDO-based) hits public beta, I plan on picking up with this project again, and will be looking to the community for their support/suggestions.
xPDO will be a big advantage once we’re at that stage. For now I’m just using the MODx API for database calls and assuming that will be the quickest path to transtitioning to xPDO. I think that it’s important that ShopX work properly on the final release of 0.9.6 without xPDO integrated to start with, and then we can work on 0.9.7 and xPDO translation (moving targets are much harder to hit).
ZenCart is my favorite open source cart also, but there’s a lot of room for improvement from there. The main thing that I hope to acheive is true modularity. I never again want to have to sift through a jumble of code that I don’t even need or use in order to make an eCommerce app do what I actually do need it to do.
No one setup is ever going to be right for every store, so my aim is to make ShopX as flexible as possible (and starting from MODx’s architecture this is a pretty natural task).
Exactly ZAP, you put it nicely... ZenCart is nice but you need to know almost everything to customize it if you do not want the famous three column store look... Modularity and ease of development should be it!!!

Also the better the core framework is documented the easier it will be for everyone else to develop the modules they need (FedEx, coupons, etc.) and therefore rapidly expand the featureset of MODxCart.
I agree with not trying to hit a moving target.

Andy is right, but I think there are other factors.
1) Developping an e-commerce module is a high load job, and if it’s open source it can be tricky to make time for dev which you could spend selling services. Either you manage to build a dev team to split the load, or you help funding its dev (donation or bounty are options, though hardly cover cost generally speaking. You could also convince clients to chip in if they’re interrested). Of course, you could also choose to make it a commercial module... another path entirely...
2) MODx 0.9.7 is closing in, and many things about its xPDO core could mean easier and/or faster development, and maybe that’s an option being considered instead of re-writing it all...

As soon as the MODx Foundation is established, I’ll be funding a generous bounty for this.
ShopX isn’t dead, by the way...it’s just sleeping...
I have been more than a little overwhelmed in life in general lately, so that’s why I still haven’t released a new version yet. But I have to do two more ShopX sites in May, so I definitely need to finish cleaning up the code and making some changes in the next week or so. As soon as I have the base installation in a good working state, I’ll give interested folks access to it on a test installation, and then it will be released to the public as soon as there’s general agreement that it’s ready.
At that point perhaps we may want to set up an SVN repository to work on it collaboratively, or we can just continue to bang away at it on my test site.
::Grabs hammer:: Ready to start banging away
