How to build a basic MODx Blog with Comments

That depends on what kind of site you want. MODx is not specifically a blogging application, it is a general-purpose content management system. Automated blogging features are a third-party add-on.

I haven’t quite finished it yet, but you might like to have a look at my version of an improvement on NewsPublisher for blogging, as used on Pogwatch. I hope to complete it today, and also publish a compact version in the forum.

I’m still working on presentation of the whole bundle, so things may move around a little in the course of the day, typos will appear and, hopefully, disappear, but I don’t intend to make any changes to the main blocks of code that replace the NewsPublisher snippet. The PHP files and chunks will also be available in a Zip file.

Are you planning on taking pkBlog to the a place where it will be a stand alone/complete blog package and not have to depend on Jot and/or Ditto? That would be nice. Just curious

Not for the moment - I think Ditto is still an outstandingly unbroken tool that doesn’t need fixing, though it could be a bit of a sledgehammer if all you want is a blog with fairly rigid and narrow requirements.

The Pog Blog is only my second foray into Jot land. Maybe it’s just unfamiliarity, but I did find it harder to work out how to configure and adapt to my needs, and it seems to me it is overdependent on PHx for processing (as opposed to formatting) its output. Still, it works just fine, so I’ll be concentrating on other aspects of front-end publishing tools for now.

I think the point is that NewsPublisher, a front-end method of adding documents such as blog posts, is not included with the standard distribution of MODx 1.0.0. The release notes say this is because it cannot cope with template variables (which you need e.g. for tags).

The MODx 1.0 sample site has a blog, but instead of using NewsPublisher you are now expected to be a manager user and to create your blog posts like other documents on your site, using "Create resource here" in the blog posts folder. This is described in the text on the blog page. The site has a template variable called documentTags for a space-delimited set of tags for posts.

I have not seen this documented - MODx 0.9.5 (which did include NewsPublisher) seems to be the latest version covered in the Wiki articles on blog-building. I could add a note to the top of the relevant articles ( though I’m happy if someone else gets there before me)

i have created the blog following instructions in start, creating blog post with newspublisher i have question how i can format or assign tv to the newly created pages (with news publisher)and format the content area ?

if I get totally desperate with understanding how to format this on my own I might actually have to upgrade...laughing. But in the meantime, excellent way to learn and understand Ditto.

I’m not sure how you have your blog configured, or how exactly to assign TV’s but I’ve made my own template for a newsposting called NewsPost (as opposed to the big list of news page which has a template called "news") and then made the post TV’s and assigned them to that template. might work for you.

Wonderful post! I use it and find it very handy

I’ve got only one problem and I wasn’t able to find the solution for it.
That is the chunk I use for displaying the blog post.


How ever I would like to be able to customize the output.
For example to display the header in a <h1> tag the whole post in a div, etc.
How do I do that ?
