@ojchris: both evo and revo are MODx, but this discussion is about revolution =)
@vrockford: I think this will be difficult because the real video files cannot be accessed via api according to a quick research:
http://vimeo.com/forums/topic:30952
http://vimeo.com/forums/api/topic:41030
but there could be a really hacky and ugly way (which I didn't test) to achieve it anyway:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11387128/get-direct-link-videos-from-vimeo-in-php
I'm pretty sure nothing will happen to the account of your client if you try that because it's not even using the API, so cannot abuse it =)) but on the other side, just for the sake of working locally this is a bit overkill I think...
To the general audience of this discussion: I have several times implemented the vimeo API (plus, pro and free accounts) in MODx and have created a snippet to do it all. For basic usage the "simple" API is way enough and you don't need the oAuth stuff for that. The snippet allows (or will allow) the use of either
advanced or
simple api, it's in production use and at the same time a very limited alpha =), but I plan to release it in the future to the community.
At the time it's basically used to fetch the vimeo thumbnail from a video of which the url (normal vimeo url to the video) is saved in a tv, that clients can copy / paste from vimeo. The thumbnails are then cached locally via modx cacheManager in a specified folder to not have the request to vimeo every time the site loads (and which will slow it down significantly) and also to allow proper resizing via phpthumbof (which also works with remote/directly fetched thumbnail urls, but not stable). The video itself is just used to build the request url (curl) for the snippet. The implementation of the video itself is simple through the iframe-embed (html skeleton in a chunk > getResources, url from tv gets inserted...simple) option.
meanwhile a possible solution I also see could be something that generates a request url to vimeo (with .json as return format) and parses it with SIMPLX Widgeteer (
http://modx.com/extras/package/simplxwidgeteer) (Tutorial here:
http://vimeo.com/23119814)...would be interested to know if this works, if somebody tries it =)
